Ground is a solid, indestructible block that appears in the Super Mario Maker series and the Mario vs. Donkey Kong series.

History

Super Mario Maker series

Ground in the Super Mario Maker series appears in every theme. When placed in the editor, Ground connects with other Ground blocks, and can sometimes appear with background elements on top of it (such as horsehair plants). Ground sometimes creates other objects as well when connected in a certain way, like corals or dead bushes. In Super Mario Maker 2, Ground recieved new functionality, being able to be connected with Slopes, Ground tiles at the start and at the end of the course, which previously couldn't connect in Super Mario Maker and Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS, and getting its own block limit of 4000.

Super Mario Bros.

Ground first appeared in Super Mario Bros. Despite it being impossible to reach it from below, Ground tiles in Ground and Underground themes acted like Brick Blocks. They could be destroyed with a Super Mushroom or a Fire Flower from below, and changed their texture to an Empty Block when hit by Small Mario. Despite looking like Empty Blocks, they still had a behavior of Brick Blocks.

New Super Mario Bros. U

The Mecha Hand in Boarding the Airship can destroy Ground blocks when it uses its fist attack.

Mario vs. Donkey Kong series

Ground in Mario vs. Donkey Kong series also acts as an indestructible solid block with no special functionality.
