"Lost a Balloon"[1] is a musical theme composed by David Wise for Donkey Kong Country, where it plays if the player loses a life.
History[edit]
Donkey Kong Country series[edit]
Donkey Kong Country[edit]
Donkey Kong Country marks the first appearance of "Lost a Balloon". It only plays when the Kongs are defeated by an enemy or obstacle; it does not play when falling down a pit, unlike in later games. It uses the sample from DK Island Swing, hence the game briefly pausing to switch to its music sample before it plays.
Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest[edit]
Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest introduces unique variants of the death theme for each of the main level themes, which plays on the levels their corresponding themes play on. Starting from this game, the theme also plays upon falling down a pit. In the Nintendo Music app, it is titled as "Dixie's Failure / Diddy's Failure" and only the variant for "Lockjaw's Saga" is available. A variant of this theme for "Crocodile Cacophony" exists in the game's data, but is unused due to a programming error.[2]
In the Game Boy Advance version of the game, only a pair of jingles are used depending on whether Diddy or Dixie is the lead Kong upon death due to limitations of the GBA soundchip.

Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble![edit]
Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble! also contains unique variants of the death theme for each of the main level themes. However, they are all based upon a slowed down version of the "Snakey Chantey" version from the previous game, with the only difference from each variant being the instruments and sound samples being used. It is not available on Nintendo Music.
This track is not present in the Game Boy Advance version of the game.
