Moneybags are enemies in Super Mario 64. One appeared only in Snowman's Land. Although they look like clams, Moneybags are actually money purses with their zipper undone along with eyes and feet. At first, they appear to resemble a regular coin, but once Mario goes near one, it will transform into a coin purse-shaped creature that hops around. Defeating them will earn the player five coins a piece. They are also featured the Super Mario 64 DS remake and in Coincentration, a mini-game in the same game.

Moneybags also made reappearances in New Super Mario Bros. in two levels. Here, it took a Mega Mushroom, Koopa Shell, six Fireballs, or six stomps to kill it. For the latter two, it would give one coin for the first five hits, and a 1-Up Mushroom upon the sixth, at which it would be defeated. The mini-game Coincentration also appears in this game, with more 3D-rendered graphics.

A creature similar to a Moneybag (and probably a close relative too), a Starbag, appears in Super Mario Galaxy. Instead of Coins and 1-Up Mushrooms, it looses 20 Star Bits instead. Also, it wouldn't disguise as a Star Bit, but walks in the ground, only footprints could be seen. It loos also more like a sack than a clamp-like purse.
