A 3-Up Moon Block[1] is a red block with a 3-Up Moon displayed on the front. It appears in New Super Mario Bros. U and New Super Luigi U. Each course has only one 3-Up Moon Block, which is hidden in places that are hard to reach. Some courses have more than one possible position for a 3-Up Moon Block; in such cases, the position of the block is randomized between them.
Furthermore, a 3-Up Moon Block can initially be seen only by the player with the Wii U GamePad in Boost Mode. For them, the block is transparent and has a sign reading "Touch." For all other players, the block is invisible and intangible. If the Boost Mode player taps the 3-Up Moon Block, it stops being transparent, loses the "Touch" sign, and becomes fully visible and tangible to all players for about five seconds. When the time runs out, it reverts to normal. If one of the non-Boost Mode players hits the block while it is visible and tangible, it dispenses a 3-Up Moon and permanently turns into a large Empty Block that is visible and tangible to all players.
In the versions of both games in New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, 3-Up Moon Blocks are removed from the game due to Boost Mode being removed. Instead, 3-Up Moons appear when Toadette hits blocks that normally contain 1-Up Mushrooms.
