During the events of Super Mario 64, Mario (or Yoshi, Luigi and Wario depending on the version) fights two Big Bullies in Lethal Lava Land. Both are keepers of a Power Star. The first one appears in the mission Boil the Big Bully, on a central platform in the lava level. In battle, Big Bully's thick hide prevents Mario from damaging the enemy. As such, Mario must push the large monster into the lava. To defeat Big Bully, Mario should punch, kick, or stomp the Bully backwards, causing the Bully to fall into the molten rock. The lava will then cause the Bully to melt, destroying the enemy and releasing a Power Star. If he is pushed onto the sinking platform next to his own, he will try hard to return to his normal place and even stop fighting Mario.

The next time Big Bully appears in the Lethal Lava Land mission, Bully the Bullies, and is a little bit more difficult to discover. On a different platform, Mario must defeat three regular Bullies in combat. This is harder than it seems, as the three Bullies gang up on Mario, forcing the plumber closer to the lava. After defeating the three baddies, Big Bully will fall from the sky and immediately attack the heroic plumber. Again, Mario must push the large Bully into the lava, causing the massive Bully to melt (and release another Power Star).

Big Bully's appearance was updated for Nintendo DS titles, the creature's appearance having a pair of collars on his horns. In Mario Kart DS, Big Bully is the first boss of Mission Mode. In this game, Yoshi would fight the metallic monster. Yoshi would have to drive through the lone Item Box and would gain Triple Mushrooms. Using them, Yoshi pushed Big Bully into the surrounding water, after which the mission would be completed.
