"Starting Grid (Time Trials / Battle)",[1] also known as "Start Grid #2 (Time Attack & Battle)"[2] or simply "Finish Trial",[3] is a musical theme composed by Kenta Nagata for Mario Kart 64, where it plays when the player begins a Time Trial, VS Race, or Battle Mode. It consists of only a single chord played three times, along with a drum roll.

Mario Kart 64 marks the first appearance of "Starting Grid (Time Trials / Battle)". It is also included in the official albums Mario Kart 64 Race Tracks, Mario Kart 64 Original Soundtrack, and Mario Kart 64 on Club Circuit.
Mario Kart: Super Circuit[edit]
In Mario Kart: Super Circuit, an arrangement of "Starting Grid (Time Trials / Battle)" plays when the player begins a Time Trial, VS Race, or Battle Mode. The rhythm is slightly altered, but it still consists of a single chord played three times, along with a drum roll.

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, an arrangement of "Luigi Raceway" arranged by Yasufumi Fukuda can play in the Mario Circuit stage. This theme also incorporates an arrangement of "Starting Grid (Time Trials / Battle)" at the beginning. It is titled "Luigi Circuit" in the game's sound test.
