"Starting Grid (Time Trials / Battle),"[1] also known as "Start Grid #2 (Time Attack & Battle)"[2] or simply "Finish Trial,"[3] is a musical theme composed by Kenta Nagata for Mario Kart 64, where it plays when a player begins a Time Trial, a VS Race, or Battle Mode. The theme itself consists of only a single chord played three times, along with a drum roll.

Arrangements[edit]

Mario Kart: Super Circuit[edit]

In Mario Kart: Super Circuit, an arrangement of "Starting Grid (Time Trials / Battle)" plays when a player begins a Time Trial, a VS Race, or Battle Mode. The rhythm is slightly altered, but it still consists of a single chord played three times, along with a drum roll.

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, an arrangement of "Luigi Raceway," titled "Luigi Circuit," can play in the Mario Circuit stage. The beginning of the arrangement features the "Starting Grid (Time Trials / Battle)" fanfare. This arrangement returns in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, now titled "Luigi Raceway," where it can play in the same stage, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, now titled "Luigi Raceway - Mario Kart 64," where it can play in any Super Smash Bros.-series and Mario Kart-series stage.
