This article is about the platform that appears in New Super Mario Bros. For the block originating from Super Mario World that is also known as a Spinning Block, see Rotating Block.
A screenshot of a Spin Block in New Super Mario Bros.

Spin Blocks[1][2][3] (also formatted as spin blocks)[4] are platforms that are found only in New Super Mario Bros. When Spin Blocks are stepped on, the player starts spinning rapidly. If they jump in this state, they will launch high into the air and slowly glide back down while spinning. The player can press +Control Pad down while in the air to perform the Drill Spin and drop more quickly and destroy multiple bricks in a row. Spin Blocks in the Mario vs. Luigi appear only in the ice level, where a Big Star will sometimes spawn. There are always coins hovering above the Spin Block.

Spin Blocks were likely replaced by the Propeller Mushroom in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, which functions very similarly, allowing the player to perform both the spinning upward launch and the Drill Spin.
