The Gonzola is a zipline-like object found at Mount Pajamaja in Mario & Luigi: Dream Team. A single line links two stations with metal flooring at different elevations on the mountain. A gear on the line rolls forward or backward on the line. It is attached to a crank with two handles by a belt. The Gonzola is primarily grey and black, but the highlights are one of two shades of purple. The Gonzola functions similarly to the Bike Pads from Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, in that both of them are for crossing chasms, but the Gonzola additionally brings people higher up the mountain or lets them go back down. There are two Gonzolas in the game.
When Mario and Luigi walk into one, they automatically jump to and hang from the device's handles, one per brother. If the Bros. are in any Bros. Move state, including the stance taken before using Spin Jump and Side Drill, the state is cancelled just before they jump. (Mario cannot get close enough to a Gonzola while underground because of the metal at each of the starting points.) Mario uses the top handle and Luigi uses the bottom handle. To start going up the mountain, the player has to press to make Mario twirl on his handle. cranking the Gonzola and making it move upward. The handles spin around, and to keep going the player has to press the button for the brother at or near the apex of the crank to make them twirl their handle around. Button prompts appear to indicate the correct timing. After each twirl, there is a cooldown period where that brother cannot twirl. By finding a rhythm, the Gonzola can climb smoothly. Without correct timing, it will slow down due to gravity, and eventually start spinning in reverse as it goes backward. Correct input will get it to move forward again. Going down the same control scheme, but the force of gravity means that the Gonzola always goes down, and does not need Mario to start. This can optionally be sped up by using the correct inputs. Once the Gonzola reaches the second station, Mario and Luigi automatically jump off. If the Gonzola is at the station it started from, the player can move the
toward the nearby ground to jump off without moving to the other station.
