“EEEEEEEK! That tears it! Time to end your journey with my handy balloon bombs!”
Kamek, Yoshi's New Island

Baron von Zeppelins[1][2] are enemy Item Balloons in the Yoshi series. Unlike the harmless balloons that release coins and other items when struck, Baron von Zeppelins drop damaging hazards or enemies. The most recurring Baron von Zeppelins, the balloon bombs, drop missile-like explosives. There are also others that drop projectile Pokeys and Shy Guys. Baron von Zeppelins appear across many levels in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, Yoshi's Island DS, and Yoshi's New Island and come in a variety of colors.

History[edit]

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island / Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3[edit]

Baron von Zeppelins make their debut in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, where they appear as common enemies strongly tied to Item Balloons, as both almost always appear together. Unlike Item Balloons, these balloons carry harmful objects that they drop if a Yoshi passes under them, and then fly away. Baron von Zeppelins appear in Visit Koopa And Para-Koopa, Nep-Enut's Domain, Don't Look Back!, Chomp Rock Zone, Danger - Icy Conditions Ahead, Welcome To Cloud World, Shifting Platforms Ahead, and The Cave Of The Bandits. In The Cave Of The Bandits, Baron von Zeppelins carrying Bandits appear.

Yoshi's Island DS[edit]

In Yoshi's Island DS, Baron von Zeppelins maintain their appearance and behavior from Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, with the only difference being that the variants that carry Shy Guys and Bandits do not appear. Baron von Zeppelins appear in Baby DK, the Jungle King!; Windblown Wilderness; Boing!; and Superhard Acrobatics! In the Island Museum, Baron von Zeppelins appear in the airborne-enemy exhibit.

Yoshi's New Island[edit]

Baron von Zeppelins reappear in Yoshi's New Island, where they are now divided into two types. The first type remains still, and when a Yoshi passes underneath, it drops the item it is carrying and flies away. The second type behaves like in previous games; this type moves slowly forward and drops the item it is carrying when a Yoshi passes underneath. Both types almost always appear together. Baron von Zeppelins appear in Cave of the Nipper Plants, Seesaw Scramble, Slime Drop Drama, and Hop 'n' Pop Till You Drop. In Slime Drop Drama, several balloons assist Kamek in battle by dropping bombs if a Yoshi passes under them. The Yoshi must destroy the balloons to make the bombs they are carrying fall on Kamek. When Kamek gets angry, he summons several Baron von Zeppelins, which will drop the bombs they are carrying and then fly away.
