At the cave's entrance, Mario can enter a Warp Pipe. This ejects him and reveals a Toad, the leader of the green Rescue Squad, stuck in the pipe. He tells Mario to get him out, and Mario must use Cutout to insert the Plunger Thing into a rock above the pipe. The Toad then explains that the members of the Rescue Squad got separated and are stuck underground. Mario can enter the pipe again, and a Shy Guy jumps out and battles him. The Rescue Squad leader goes down into the cave, and Mario must follow him.

Shortly after going underground, Mario will see two Shy Guys throwing a crumpled piece of paper. He must defeat the Shy Guys and hammer the paper to reveal the first Rescue Squad member. The second Rescue Squad member is found hiding from a Swoop after two moving blocks. Mario must paint in part of the next moving block and go up. For the next moving block section, Mario must wait until one has risen and walk through a hole to go further down. From there, he can use three more moving blocks to enter a new area.

This area has many Buzzy Beetles Mario can battle. The green Rescue Squad leader and his cadets are also located here. Mario can continue right, past some waterfalls, to reach a Save Block and Toad #3 of the green Rescue Squad, who is Bowser Taped to a moving block. Mario can go south to find the fourth Toad, who is running in a circle with Shy Guys. By hammering or jumping on a piece of wood at the right time, Mario can launch the Toad to him, and is attacked by the Shy Guys.

Continuing south, Mario enters an area with more waterfalls. Toad #5 can be found by using Cutout on one of the waterfalls. After defeating him with a Fire Flower, Mario can repaint Toad #6 of the green Rescue Squad, who gives Mario a 1-Up Mushroom Card. With all the Toads rescued, Mario must return to the leader near the bridge.

The Toads stack up and form a bridge. Two Shy Guys and a Spike Guy jump on it and attack Mario. Once they are defeated, Mario must pull the bridge back up and can paint in a wooden board to reach the yellow Mini Paint Star. Alternatively, he can break a Brick Block with a Lemon on top of it, causing the Lemon to roll near two Slurp Guys. To squeeze the Lemon, Mario must defeat them. He can then walk behind a wall to collect a blue Mini Paint Star.

Indigo Underground is a location from Paper Mario: Color Splash. The path leading here is unlocked after getting the blue Mini Paint Star from Port Prisma. Collecting the blue Mini Paint Star from Ruddy Road also leads to this level, but doing so requires gathering all members of the Purple Rescue Squad, whose member #1 is located in Daffodil Peak, which can only be accessed by completing this level. Therefore, the only purpose of the path from Ruddy Road is to serve as a shortcut on the World Map.The Mini Paint Stars in this level unlocks paths leading to Daffodil Peak and Bloo Bay Beach. Every member of the green Rescue Squad can be found here, as well as the Lemon Thing.

At the cave's entrance, Mario can enter a Warp Pipe. This ejects him and reveals Rescue Green, the leader of the green Rescue Squad, stuck in the pipe. He tells Mario to get him out, and Mario must use Cutout to insert the Plunger Thing into a rock above the pipe. Rescue Green then explains that the members of the his squad got separated and are stuck underground. Mario can enter the pipe again, and a Shy Guy jumps out and battles him. Rescue Green goes down into the cave, and Mario must follow him.

Following a large slope downwards, Mario must use another moving block to reach Shunned Guy, who has sucked the color out of a Rescue Squad Toad. After defeating him with a Fire Flower, Mario can repaint Toad #6 of the green Rescue Squad, who gives Mario a 1-Up Mushroom Card. With all the Toads rescued, Mario must return to Rescue Green near the bridge.
