Secrets, also called Red Numbers[1] (or red numbers),[2] are invisible collectable objects that appear in Super Mario 64 and Super Mario 64 DS. They always appear in sets of five and produce a Power Star once all are collected. Secrets can be collected usually by simply walking over the areas they are placed at, sometimes marked with coins.
In Super Mario 64, when the first secret is found, a slow version of the "Star collected" sound is heard. It gets faster with each successive secret, until the final secret makes the sound outright. In Super Mario 64 DS, all five secrets make the first secret's sound.
In Super Mario 64 DS, secrets do not appear on the lower screen map of the course. The Silver Stars introduced in this game act similarly to the secrets, although they appear on the map, and a collected Silver Star is lost if the player takes damage.
