Thorns

Thorns,[1] also referred to as crystals,[2] spike blocks,[3] or simply spikes,[4] appear in the Super Mario franchise as spiky obstacles found mostly in castle levels in the Yoshi's Island series, including Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island (and its reissue), Yoshi's Island DS, and Yoshi's New Island. Touching a thorn immediately causes a Yoshi to lose a life. A Yoshi Egg destroys a single thorn, but since thorns are found usually in groups and a Yoshi can carry only six Yoshi Eggs at a time, most thorn groups cannot be destroyed, though Baby Donkey Kong's explosive eggs in Yoshi's Island DS can easily destroy a group of them in one shot. Some thorns reveal Winged Clouds when destroyed, and in The Potted Ghost's Castle, one specific thorn reveals even a door.
