This is a list of pre-release and unused content for the game Mario & Luigi: Brothership.
Early ideas[edit]
Early concept art depicted a completely different style, described as more "rugged", with Mario and Luigi more closely resembling their appearances in most other games.[1] Producer Akira Otani also thought having an HD-2D art style like the Acquire-developed Octopath Traveler was a possibility at one point before the final art direction was settled upon.[2]
One of the titles proposed for the game was Mario & Luigi: Wonder, but it was changed due to the release of Super Mario Bros. Wonder.[3]
Luigi Logic was going to be usable in every battle in the game. However, this was toned down to only affect certain boss battles, since the number of enemies and bosses in Brothership meant having unique Luigi Logic scenes for them all would require far too much work.[4][5]
Princess Peach was also going to get a new outfit in the game too. However, since there was no story-related reason to justify it, Acquire had her join IDLE so she could wear their signature scarf.[3]
Luigi's role as an AI-controlled character was controversial with the development team, with Akira Otani being against the idea. This resulted in the addition of Luigi Logic, as a way to give Luigi a bigger role in the game mechanics wise.[3]

Unused models[edit]
A model for a Glohm version of Burnadette exists in the game's files. Given she is not afflicted by Glohm similarly to Chilliam in the final game, it seems the story was different when this model was created.
Placeholder models for an Islet and Wayaway Island also exist in the files. The former shows a standard tropical island with sand and palm trees, while the latter shows some cubes and cylinders with placeholder text on them. Given the latter is similar to other island preview models seen through the Shipshape Island telescope, it appears that Wayaway Island was meant to be accessed from Shipshape at one point in development.
Finally, there are numerous test objects scattered throughout the game's files, including a map cube, a default battle background with a checkerboard pattern and many decorations meant for a test area.
Test NPC[edit]
There is an unused NPC in the game with dialogue intended to test out the game's language settings. In English, he says the following:
"The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. THE QUICK BROWN FOX JUMPS OVER THE LAZY DOG A TOTAL OF 5,728,100,643.99 TIMES. Mr Jock, TV quiz PhD: bags 20% fewer lynx at a cafe; voilã, they're "worth" $10. That's 10 + 9 - 8 = 11 Nintendo Switch consoles & Nintendo 3DS! He claimed though I don't believe him to have done so in an eyes-shut state...Nintendo(#Nintendo_Europe@nintendo.de)"
While in Japanese he merely says:
特殊文字一覧.
Or:
"A list of special characters."
Other dialogue for him exists in Spanish, French, Italian, Korean, Dutch, Portugese and both simplified and traditional Chinese, with different text.
Unused Battle Plug combos[edit]
Videos exist in the files showing placeholder videos for unfinished Battle Plug combos. Given these only show Mario performing a standard jump attack, it seems the combos in question were cut before being implemented into the game.
Unused graphics[edit]
Map icons[edit]
An early map icon for Shipshape Island exists within the game's files, grayed out and labeled "不使用". Icons for Fortress Zokket when flying and the Soli-Tree when awakened are also in the game's files but are left unused, since it is not possible to view them through the cannon in those forms.[6]
Tutorial image[edit]
An early screenshot of the game can be found in Game/Resources/UI/Tutorial_Image/Textures, which is likely meant for the game's tutorial. This shows Mario battling some Seedles with a different UI, as well as what appears to be a debug menu at the top of the page.[6]
Event images[edit]
Other unused screenshots can be found in Game/Resources/EventImage, and were meant to show Bowser and Zokkets armies taking over Heatfreeze Island and Twistee Island respectively. These feature different fast forward icons and Glohm particles from the final game.[6]
