Nintendo Character Guide (1993)[edit]

"Bowser" King of the Koopas
His evil magic is powerful, but it has not helped Bowser make friends. The fact is, even the other Koopa's hate and fear him. He decided to conquer the Mushroom Kingdom because he could not stand the idea of happy fungi.

Super Mario series[edit]

Super Mario Bros.[edit]

  • Manual Description: "The sorcerer king holding Princess Toadstool captive in the last castle. He comes at you spitting fire. There are several ways to kill him, but you only get points if you use fireballs."
  • Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console Manual Bio: "He is holding Princess Toadstool prisoner in the final castle. He attacks by blowing fireballs in your direction."

Super Mario Galaxy[edit]

  • Prima Games Official Guide bio: Bowser is the great fire-breathing villain of the Mushroom Kingdom, a dastardly creature bent on capturing Princess Peach and taking control of the kingdom for his own, nefarious needs. He commands a vast army of Goombas, Koopas, and other nasties that do his bidding without question. Mario always manages to save Princess Peach from Bowser and stop his schemes, but the brute never learns. Perhaps if Mario finally corners Bowser in the heart of the cosmos, he can pound a little sense into the scoundrel.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii[edit]

  • European Website Bio: "The flame-haired, fire-breathing King of the Koopas could never be described as a quitter. For every failed attempt to hold Princess Peach captive, Bowser seems to have five more schemes up his sizeable sleeve. Could his latest plot finally see him getting the better of Mario?"

Super Mario 3D Land[edit]

  • North American Website Bio: "The dastardly King of the Koopas is making Mario's life difficult once again. He'll spit fireballs, shake the ground, and throw whatever he can get his hands on to keep you from getting to Princess Peach."
  • European Website Bio: "Mario's arch-enemy is waiting for him in his castle..."

New Super Mario Bros. 2[edit]

  • North American Website Bio: "The colossal King of the Koopas is up to no good again—and with the Koopalings in tow, he might be unstoppable... Can you make it all the way to his castle?"

New Super Mario Bros. U[edit]

  • Website Bio: "With a fearsome fleet of airships at his disposal, Bowser and his cohorts have decided to mount an attack right on the heroes' home turf."

Super Mario Run[edit]

  • Notebook bio: "This evil king likes to wreck the Mushroom Kingdom. He waits for Mario inside each of the castles he's built."

The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3 Writers Bible Bio[edit]

"Despite every devious and dastardly plot he hatches, Koopa has a certain Rodney Dangerfield-like vulnerability which makes him as loveable as he is hateable. Koopa is pure id. Unmitigated selfishness running rampant in an ugly green body. He will capture, trick, bribe, threaten, attack, cast evil spells, hurl malicious insults, throw temper tantrums, and do anything else despicable and nasty to defeat the Super Marios. And he has so much fun doing it; we always wanna see him try again. In Super Mario 3, Koopa fans can enjoy his humorous rantings and funny frustrations even more as he contends with his seven black sheep Koopalings. If reptiles had hair, Koopa would've pulled all his out by now."

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars[edit]

Bio: Yep. Mario teams up with Bowser. These two archenemies have put aside their differences and joined forces. Let's hope this alliance sticks. Watch your back, Mario.

Tattle It's the Evil King Bowser! Finally, after all this time! Max HP: 50, Defense Power: 1 He has a huge arsenal of attacks, from blowing clouds of fire to jumping on us. Fire Attack: 8, Stamp Attack/Nail Attack: 6 I'm sure he has other attacks that I don't know. Boy, does he look nasty! Tattle That's Bowser, genius. You've only fought this guy like, a bazillion times. He'll keep kidnapping Peach, and you'll keep fighting him, until the end of time, I think. Max HP is 70, Attack is 7, and Defense is 2. In addition to his fire breath, he jumps on you and bites. If you get jumped on, you'll be unable to use a command for a little while. Oh, and his bite sometimes poisons you as well. I don't know what Bowser's doing here, but we gotta defeat him quick!

31 Bowser
(Classic)
Trophy31.png Super Mario Bros.
10/85
Bowser has a long history of kidnapping Princess Peach to lure his nemesis, Mario, into traps. He leads an enormous group of mischievous creatures, not the least of which are his seven children. With outrageous strength, flammable breath, and more spikes than you can shake a Star Rod at, Bowser is a constant threat.
32 Bowser [Smash]
(Adventure)
Trophy32.png B Button: Fire Breath
Smash B Button: Koopa Klaw
In many ways, Bowser is the toughest character around. Not only does he have near-impervious hide, but his great mass makes him almost impossible to hurl offscreen. Of course, his weight also makes him rather slow to maneuver, so when facing him in battle, it's best to press your attack and not give him a chance to counter.
33 Bowser [Smash]
(All-Star)
Trophy33.png Up & B Button: Whirling Fortress
Down & B Button: Bowser Bomb
Bowser's Fire Breath strikes continually, but it grows gradually smaller over time until it's barely smoldering. The Koopa Klaw rakes enemies at a distance and pulls nearby foes in close for a good gnawing. Bowser's Whirling Fortress moves laterally over the ground; it works in midair as a recovery. The Bowser Bomb is powerful and paves the way for more attacks.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl[edit]

  • Instruction Booklet bio: "The King of the Koopas is a destructive heavyweight."
  • Website bio: "The biggest and the heaviest of fighters, Bowser has a slightly different flavor this time around! To be honest, there are a LOT of characters that offer a slightly different flavor this time around. If you think they’re all going to be the same as they have been, it'll be rough for you."

Snake's codec conversation[edit]

  • Colonel: Careful, Snake! That's the great and terrible Bowser!
  • Snake: Bowser? Looks like a cheap movie monster.
  • Colonel: Hardly. Bowser leads an entire army of monsters. But I'd worry more about his claws and fire if I were you.
  • Snake: Doesn't look that tough to me. Seems kind of slow, actually.
  • Colonel: Well, he is the king of Koopas. It's only natural he'd be slow. But that's only because he's the heaviest fighter here--by far. He's a powerhouse of destruction. Careful he doesn't flatten you.

# Name Image Appearance(s) Description
17 Bowser BrawlTrophy017.png NES Super Mario Bros.
GCN Super Mario Sunshine
The king of the Koopas and Mario's eternal rival. He breathes fire, hurls hammers, attacks from vehicles like the Koopa Clown Car, and uses all sorts of weapons in hopes of taking out Mario. As his size suggests, he's immensely powerful. His son Bowser Jr. is a chip off the old block who spends his time creating trouble for Mario.
18 Giga Bowser BrawlTrophy018.png Wii Super Smash Bros. Brawl Bowser, transformed into the terrible and brutal form first seen in Super Smash Bros. Melee. While in this form, he's invulnerable--he takes no damage and cannot be budged. His appearance is so fierce, it's as if he doesn't even belong in the Smash Bros. universe. He cannot maintain this form for long, so dealing out damage efficiently is key.
150 Paper Bowser BrawlTrophy150.png Wii Super Paper Mario The great king of the Koopas who plots to rule the land with a firm fist. In a change of events, Bowser goes from being Mario's rival to adventuring side by side with him. Bowser's special skill is breathing fire and he has nearly twice the attack power of Mario or Peach, which allows him to take out foes from a distance or multiple enemies with a single blow.
152 Wedding Bowser BrawlTrophy152.png Wii Super Paper Mario The great Koopa king in a sharp, white tuxedo. Bowser is forced into marriage with Princess Peach by Count Bleck, who plots to wipe out the universe with the Chaos Heart. Although it's all part of Count Bleck's plan, Bowser doesn't seem to be displeased with the prospect. This might just be the last time we ever see Bowser in a tuxedo.

The archenemy of Mario and the reason Peach spends more time kidnapped than in her own castle. His plans aren't always the best, and occasionally he even finds himself on Mario's side. In Smash Bros., he's a serious heavyweight who laughs off weaker attacks. Hit him hard to send him flying! Mario's princess-kidnapping arch-enemy. Yes, he's quite the villain, but he can also be a bit of a buffoon, too. And sometimes, he even ends up on Mario's side! As a serious heavyweight, he's tough to launch, and using standard attacks on him will only make him laugh. If you want to send him flying, make sure to whack him really hard!

Giga Bowser N/A SSB4TrophyGigaBowser.png Prepare to behold Bowser in all his Koopa glory. This fearsome form first appeared all the way back in Melee. While transformed, Bowser deals extra damage, is better at launching foes, and even gains special effects on some of his attacks. He won't flinch and can't be thrown, but he does still take damage. The definitive way to prove that Bowser's the king. This fearsome form made its debut all the way back in Melee. Bowser + Standard Kart StandardBowserTrophy3DS.png N/A N/A Bowser has tricked out his kart exactly like Mario's. With a level playing field, it all comes down to the driver's skill. Well, and luck. And if the driver got a good night's sleep... Only the goddess of victory knows who will win. That's part of the fun of Mario Kart! The kart Bowser has here isn't unique to him. You can use the same parts with any racer - even Mario! Of course, even if everyone has the same kart, the race still won't come down to pure skill - luck always plays a part. It's that unpredictability that makes Mario Kart so exciting, after all!
Paper Bowser PaperBowserTrophy3DS.png N/A N/A Bowser's defense team argues that, considering his latent savageness and the promises of wish-granting power, it could only be expected that Bowser would try to grab the Sticker Comet. Who could resist something like that? Bowser was just a victim of circumstance! The Sticker Fest looked super fun, so he thought he'd get up on stage. And with the Sticker Comet looking all sparkly and stuff, how could he NOT touch it?! And that's when the evil, evil Royal Sticker brought out poor Bowser's dark side. You see? Bowser was just a victim of circumstance!
Paper Bowser (Second Form) ShinyBowserTrophy3DS.png N/A N/A The Royal Stickers can grant wishes, both good and bad. When one of them landed on Bowser, he ran riot through the Mushroom Kingdom, and even when Mario managed to beat him, he came back in an even more destructive form than before! Yikes!
Bowser + Flame Runner
Bowser + Bowser Bike
N/A SSB4TrophyBowserFlameRunner.png Wii Mario Kart Wii (04/2008) Now THIS is a monster of a bike! It was obviously designed with Bowser in mind, since they both weigh a ton and both have trouble accelerating. Once you get up to top speed, though, these two really come into their own! Incidentally, Bowser is known as Koopa in Japan, but the Japanese name for this bike is Super Bowser. How rare. Now THIS is a monster of a bike! It was clearly designed with Bowser in mind, but since they both weigh a ton, they might have trouble accelerating. Once they get to top speed, though, they're a practically unstoppable team! Incidentally, although Bowser is known as Koopa in Japan, this bike still uses his English name there.

Palutena's Guidance[edit]

  • Pit: When I think of Bowser, I always picture him deep in his castle, steeling himself for a fight.
  • Viridi: Or, you know, playing golf or racing in a go-kart.
  • Pit: He's looking pretty aggro today. Must be because he's in a fighting game.
  • Viridi: When Mario first fought Bowser, I hear he had to use an axe to chop down a rope bridge and drop the big guy.
  • Palutena: It all sounds like something from an 8-bit action movie!
  • Pit: I won't lie. I'm a little scared.
  • Palutena: Don't be. Bowser may be powerful, but he also leaves big openings. Fight smart and look for chances to counterattack.

Tips[edit]

- Fire Breath: "Fire Breath loses power the longer it is used. Waiting a short time between bursts will allow it recharge."

- Bowser Bomb: "Bowser will leap into the air horns first. Hitting an opponent on the way up makes it much easier to clobber them again on the way down."

- Tough Guy: "Bowser's a real tough guy. When he's only lightly damaged, weaker attacks won't make him flinch."

- Whirling Fortress: "Repeatedly pressing the button while using this in midair will give you a small boost in how high you fly."

- Bowser Bomb: "If you land this on a shielding enemy, you can break their shield in one hit. Just make sure you capitalize afterward with a dropkick!"

- Bowser Bomb: "You can grab on to an edge while bombing, but only if you're really close to it. It's a quick albeit risky way to descend quickly."

- Fire Breath: "Once Bowser's used up his fire once, he needs time to recharge. Give him 10 seconds, and he'll be ready to roast!"

- Flying Slam: "Bowser's target has a bit of control over their direction in the air, too. The lower their damage, the more influence they have (but still not much)."

- Whirling Fortress: "Try using this right after shielding an enemy attack. Cancel the shield and whirl toward the enemy to counterattack!"

Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games[edit]

Flag Description (Wii U version)[edit]

Bowser
The vicious and egotistical King of the Koopas! He's come to these Olympic Games with a host of seasoned minions in tow, and ordered them to win gold on penalty of fire breath - even though he plans to keep all of them for himself. It's just what any good villain would do.

Miis' Dialogues (Wii U version)[edit]

  • Bowser can breathe fire, right? Well, he should use that to light the Olympic Caldron at the Opening Ceremony! Talk about a showstopper! ...Actually, you know what? Scratch that idea. I'm not sure that angry fire breath is the best way to embody the Olympic spirit.
  • Bowser has ten spines sticking out of his shell. They're pretty sturdy looking, not to mention pokey. You wouldn't want to be on the business end of those!
  • Bowser has a son named Bowser Jr. He might be the son of the big bad Koopa himself, but since he's still a kid, he comes across as kind of adorable.
