Mario battling a Mega Pokey on the Tropic planet

Mario lands on the starting planet, similar to the first two missions. Mario (or Luigi) can reach the Launch Star on the house with a Triple Jump or through an orange Warp Pipe on the underside of the planet. The Warp Pipe leads to a boxed room that contains coins embedded in the ground and a ? Coin that activates Rainbow Notes. The Warp Pipe on top of this room takes Mario to the Launch Star, which leads him to the Tropic Planets littered with Thorny Flowers. A Purple Toad is inside a Crystal. If Mario frees him by breaking it, he thanks and advises Mario that the flowers are weak to coconuts, so Mario must spin the coconuts. One of the Thorny Flowers contains a Sling Star, so Mario must destroy the Thorny Flower with a coconut to use the Sling Star. The next tropic planet after the Sling Star has a Mega Pokey. Once Mario defeats it with coconuts, a Launch Star appears, and Mario can use it.

Mario lands on top of the Sling Star of the Asteroid planet. He can choose not to use it and instead walk to the bottom and use a Warp Pipe. Through the Warp Pipe, Mario is inside a spherical area with a ? Coin and some Goombas. The ? Coin triggers a Rainbow Star to appear, allowing Mario to defeat the Goombas and the Chomps encircling the Asteroid Planet. Once Mario uses the Sling Star, he can proceed to the underside of the Chomp Saucer Planet. It has many electrical walls and some Goombas. On the top side of this planet, cannons shoot Bullet Bills and Chomps, Rocket Engines shoot fire, and Octoombas patrol on the platforms.

A Crystal at the top of the formation contains a Launch Star. As Mario is launched onto an airship, two Octopuses will shoot coconuts or fireballs at Mario from an adjacent airship. Mario can find a Green Toad trapped in a Crystal. Once the Green Toad is freed, he suggests Mario to spin to rebound these coconuts to defeat them. Once the Octopuses are defeated the bridge between the two ships lowers. Octoombas are located on the other side of the Airship. One crate contains a Life Mushroom, which expands Mario's health from three wedges to six wedges. The Launch Star inside a Crystal on the end of this airship takes Mario to the bottom of the Octo Magma planet, which contains embedded coins. The Luma nearby warns Mario of an upcoming boss fight. The top of the planet contains a magma pit and several Crystals containing Star Bits.

Mario confronts King Kaliente. King Kaliente shoots three fireballs at a time and then shoots one coconut. Mario can hit this coconut to inflict a hit and release Star Bits. If Mario eventually hits another coconut, King Kaliente attempts to rebound it, so Mario must hit the coconut again to inflict another hit. This hit, however, knocks King Kaliente's crown off, enraging him. King Kaliente then proceeds to throw several blue Lava Bubbles. King Kaliente also rebounds the coconut twice. Once Mario inflicts a third hit, however, he defeats King Kaliente, and a Power Star is released.
