History[edit]

Super Mario series[edit]

Super Mario World[edit]

Super Mario World marks the first appearance of "Gēto o kitta toki". It plays when Mario or Luigi touches and activates a Midway Gate, as well as when the player saves their progress.

Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2[edit]

In Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2, "Gēto o kitta toki" plays where it is lower-pitched, shorter by one second, and compressed due to the technical limitations of the Game Boy Advance.

New Super Mario Bros.[edit]

"Gēto o kitta toki" was brought back and modified for New Super Mario Bros., where it more closely resembles a whistle. It plays solely for when Mario or Luigi passes a Checkpoint Flag, which debuted in this game.

Super Mario 3D Land[edit]

A new arrangement of "Gēto o kitta toki", which is higher-pitched than before, was created for Super Mario 3D Land.

Super Mario 3D World[edit]

Another arrangement of "Gēto o kitta toki" was created for Super Mario 3D World. It is lower-pitched, three seconds longer, and has an additional sparkle sound on top of the main sound. This arrangement also appears identically in Bowser's Fury.

Super Mario Maker[edit]

An 8-bit chiptune arrangement of "Gēto o kitta toki" was made for the Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros. 3 game styles in Super Mario Maker, introduced in a post-launch update alongside the addition of the Checkpoint Flag. It is the same length as the Super Mario World arrangement and is of the same pitch as the Super Mario 3D World arrangement. Additionally, the original version from Super Mario World is used in the game style for said game as well as for when the player opens the notifications inbox.

Mario Kart series[edit]

In the Mario Kart series, starting with Super Mario Kart, a high-pitched arrangement of "Gēto o kitta toki" from Super Mario World is used for when a player finishes the final lap of a race or time trial. A pitched-down version is used in every entry from Mario Kart 8 onwards.
