The Power-Up flow chart found in the manual of Super Mario World
A diagram showing the form system of Super Mario World, featuring Small Mario (simply identified as Mario), Super Mario, Fire Mario, and Cape Mario. Despite being in the game, Invincible Mario and Balloon Mario are not included, likely as they can overlap any of these forms without overwriting them.

Various forms can be taken across the Super Mario franchise, usually by collecting power-up items, giving the player new abilities. How forms work varies by form and game, but usually they either last until the player is damaged (or they are overwritten with another item) or otherwise wear off after a certain amount of time. In most games, items for most special forms only appear once the player is in the Super form or beyond, with the Small form only receiving Super Mushrooms and a few other specific items. In several early games, getting hit while in any powered-up form causes the player to immediately revert to Small form, though starting with the international release of Super Mario Bros. 3, they instead revert to Super form when in a form beyond that, which became the standard system starting with all versions of Super Mario Land 2 - 6 Golden Coins. Some forms, such as Invincibility, can overlap other forms without overwriting them, which is how all forms work in Super Mario 64. In Super Mario Sunshine, forms are instead achieved through different attachments to F.L.U.D.D. as alternative to its Squirt Nozzle, with the Hover Nozzle being the default and lasting until another type is collected, returning to the Hover Nozzle when a new area is entered. In Super Mario Galaxy and its sequel, both damage-based and timed forms can only be used one at a time, with even Rainbow form canceling out other forms. Some playable characters cannot use forms like these, such as Nabbit in New Super Luigi U, New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, and Super Mario Bros. Wonder.

List of general/Mario forms

As the main character, most forms apply to Mario first and foremost. A majority are shared with Luigi, and in some games other characters, including — but not limited to — Toad, Yellow Toad and Blue Toad, Toadette, Peach, Daisy, Rosalina, and Wario. This table includes such forms that are used by several characters and the few that are exclusive to Mario, usually due to Mario being the only playable character in a game.

Note: Due to the large amount of appearances some forms have throughout the series, the appearance lists on this table are restricted to the respective first and last. The lists also only count appearances of forms as power-ups rather than as distinct entities (for example, not counting Metal Mario and Tanooki Mario's appearances in Mario Kart 8) and also does not count direct ports or compilation re-releases (such as Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2). Other reissues, such as New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, are counted.

List of Yoshi forms

Yoshi occasionally uses a traditional power-up system exclusive to him, usually in his appearances in Super Mario series games. In his own platforming series, this type of power-up is the exception rather than the rule, with it mostly being used for invincibility power-ups.

Flaming Wario is a heavily recurring form that generally features two segments. The first involves Wario running around uncontrollably with his suspenders on fire, with the player only able to make him jump and Wario only turning when he touches a surface, with enemies being stunned if they hit him. After several moments, he becomes the second form where his entire body is on fire, where he moves much slower, can no longer jump but can now be steered, defeats enemies on contact, and can destroy certain blocks. After a few moments of this, Wario becomes covered in ash before shouting it off, returning to normal. In both states, falling in water instantly returns him to normal.

List of Wario forms

In the first two games of the Wario Land series, Wario uses the same basic power-up system as in the primary Super Mario series. Starting with Wario Land II, however, this is replaced with a separate reaction system. This table does not count instances of Wario taking forms that are identical to Mario ones in role, function, and naming.

Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 Bouncy Wario springs uncontrollably, which can be used to reach new areas, but also can be used to force Wario to backtrack in downward-oriented segments. Depending on the game, holding the jump button may make him jump higher or faster. He is returned to normal after enough bounces.

Virtual Boy Wario Land Bubble Wario is found only in underwater sections when touching large bubbles that come out of cracks in walls. He constantly moves slowly upward, with the player only being able to control his left and right movement, and is able to pass through currents unaffected. Like Bouncy Wario, it is helpful when traveling upward, but a hindrance when traveling downward. Touching any surface, including the surface of the water, pops the bubble and returns Wario to normal.

Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 Crazy Wario stumbles about in an inebriated manner, occasionally stopping or changing direction. He can jump, but is still difficult to control. In the former game, he can also spew toxic gas that slowly moves across the screen to defeat enemies. In the former game, he stuns enemies on contact, while in the latter, touching enemies reverts him to normal. Falling in water returns him to normal in both games.

Flat Wario can drift through the air by jumping or falling off ledges, allowing him to cross wide gaps, collect many coins, and reach tight ledges. He can also make it through low areas with small pits that normal Wario would fall in if he attempted to crawl. However, this form moves very slowly on the ground while making a repetitive high-pitched noise. Falling in water, touching a falling drop, taking damage, being grabbed by a D-Bat or Omodonmeka in the first two games, or entering a decompressor in the final game returns him to normal.

Toadette form

For her appearance in New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, Toadette is given a highly unorthodox power-up form exclusive to herself, as the associated item cannot be collected by other characters.
