Yoshi and the Mysterious Book is an upcoming side-scrolling platform game in the Yoshi series set to be released for the Nintendo Switch 2 on May 21, 2026 as part of the Super Mario Bros. 40th Anniversary celebration. First announced during the September 2025 Nintendo Direct, the game features a distinct art style resembling paper illustration, featuring low-frame rate animations, painterly textures on Yoshi and interactive creatures, and pencil-esque outlines on faraway objects.

Story

While Yoshi is eating fruit from a tree, a sentient book known as Mister Encyclopedia (Mr. E for short) falls from the sky. As he cannot read his own pages, which hold information on various creatures, Yoshi uses Mr. E's magnifying glass to magically jump into his pages and help investigate.

Gameplay

Yoshi and the Mysterious Book is a side-scrolling platformer starring Yoshi. The main gameplay is similar to previous Yoshi games, featuring individual levels to be explored. The objective of each level is to study a specific creature, which starts unnamed. Yoshi is then sent into the book's pages in order to discover traits of said creature and have them written down in Mr. E's pages. Stars are awarded for each discovery, and at the end of the level, the creature can be named by the player or by Mr. E.

Stars can be used to unlock new chapters in the book, with three chapters being known so far:

• Chapter 1: Wildwoods
• Chapter 2: Mountaintops
• Chapter 3: Seaside

Yoshi retains the ability to Flutter Jump, Ground Pound, stick his tongue out to eat various creatures, and turn them into eggs. New to this game is the ability to let creatures ride on Yoshi's back, allowing them to use their unique abilities to Yoshi's benefit. Other creatures instead help Yoshi traverse in new ways, such as riding on them like a surfboard or floating inside bubbles they create.

Yoshis	Other members of Yoshi's species. Pink, Light-Blue and Blue Yoshis can be seen in the game's first teaser.
Mr. E	Short for Mister Encyclopedia; a living magical book that falls onto Yoshi's Island, but is incapable of reading his own pages. He seeks the aid of the Yoshis in order to catalogue the creatures on his pages.
Bowser Jr.	Bowser's son.

Creature	Description
Chapter 1: Wildwoods
Crazee Dayzee	Flower-like creatures capable of making other flowers bloom around them.
Bunchabee	A small bee with a pointed head which appears in swarms.
Scatterpuff	Dandelions that can be scattered by walking through them. Their seed heads can take root on other objects, causing boulders to crack and enemies to stop moving.
Croakaoke	Squat duck-like creatures carrying leaves on their heads. They can propel Yoshi to higher places when jumped on.
Glubbit	A green creature that can create bubbles.
Chapter 2: Mountaintops
	A umbrella-like bird creature that can be used by Yoshi to fall more slowly.
	A floating cloud with a face and small green wings.
Chapter 3: Seaside
	A creature resembling a Spray Fish that has a fishing rod.
	A light blue fish resembling a balloon. It can boost Yoshi through the water by blowing bubbles from its fin.
Other creatures
	A teardrop-shaped creature with gray, white and black stripes.
	A skateboard-like creature that can carry Yoshi over water.
	A smaller version of the skateboard-like creature that is collected by Yoshi.
	A giant green creature with plants growing over it and a large belly button.
	A large purple fish.
	Smaller red and blue fish that swim in groups.
	Pink fish that give coin-like glyphs when touched.
	A creature resembling a pink hang glider with orange wings. Yoshi can use it to glide through the air.
	A large creature with a red mane which can be ridden by Yoshi. It can jump high in the air and rotate its face like a drill.
	A snail which leaves a trail of slime where it walks. When touched, it uncoils and sticks up in the air.
