Yoshi and the Mysterious Book is a side-scrolling platform game in the Yoshi series developed by Good-Feel, and released worldwide for the Nintendo Switch 2 on May 21, 2026 as part of the Super Mario Bros. 40th Anniversary celebration. The game features a distinct art style resembling paper illustration, featuring low-frame rate animations, painterly textures on Yoshi and interactive creatures, and pencil-esque outlines on faraway objects.
On May 7, 2026, a free demo for the game was released at select Best Buy, Target, Walmart, and GameStop stores in the United States.[16] In Canada, the demo is also available at Walmart and Best Buy stores since May 12,[17] with the demo coming out on May 21 in EB Games and London Drugs stores.[17]
Story
One day in Bowser's Castle, Bowser Jr. walks into a library and finds an unconscious, sentient book known as Mister Encyclopedia (Mr. E for short) on top of a pile of books. Upon opening the book, he sees an illustration of a creature known as the Bewilder Bird flying near Yoshi's Island. Soon after, Bowser Jr. flies to the island with the Junior Clown Car and the book in tow. During his flight, he notices a small magnifying glass dangling from the bottom of the book. Upon using the glass to inspect the book, he gets sucked into it in a flash of light, leaving the Junior Clown Car to crash onto the island without its pilot.
While Yoshi is eating apples from a tree, he and his friends see the Junior Clown Car and Mr. E falling from the sky. As he cannot read his own pages, which hold information on various creatures, Yoshi uses Mr. E's magnifying glass to magically jump into his pages and help investigate them. Inside Mr. E's pages, Yoshi discovers information about each creature, which is then written down in Mr. E.
While exploring Mr. E's pages, Yoshi encounters Kamek and later Bowser Jr. The two repeatedly cross paths with Yoshi while pursuing the elusive Bewilder Bird across various habitats.
Eventually, in the Bewilder Bird Habitat, Yoshi discovers a Crazee Dayzee, which is revealed to be a juvenile Bewilder Bird in disguise. This creature becomes Yoshi's ally for the rest of the habitat and reunites with an adult Bewilder Bird after Yoshi defeats Bowser Jr. and Kamek.
In the aftermath, Mr. E reveals that he was created by a professor to protect all the creatures the Yoshis have been discovering from extinction. He asks the Yoshis to continue helping him document the remaining creatures, and they agree. As they explore more pages from Mr. E, Yoshi once again encounters Kamek and Bowser Jr., who are trying to return to Bowser's Castle but keep getting captured by giant creatures throughout the habitats. Yoshi uses the help of previous allies to rescue them.
Yoshi eventually reaches the Moon, where he reunites with a juvenile Bewilder Bird that can transform into any cataloged creature, aiding Yoshi in rescuing Bowser Jr. and Kamek from a giant vine that has captured them and pulled them underground. Together, Yoshi and the Bewilder Bird reach the core of the Moon to rescue Bowser Jr. and Kamek, but they are then captured by a creature residing there.
It is revealed that the enormous moon hanging above is a colossal Crazee Dayzee on a collision course with Earth. To prevent a disaster, Yoshi must destroy its core. After Yoshi defeats the Moon creature and saves Bowser Jr. and Kamek, a portal opens. He bids farewell to the juvenile Bewilder Bird, which returns to its adult counterpart. They then exit Mr. E's pages just before the Moon explodes.
Back on Yoshi's Island, Kamek, Bowser Jr., and Yoshi emerge from the book. Mr. E congratulates Yoshi for assisting the creatures. Grateful to be back, Bowser Jr. and Kamek leave the island to return to Bowser's Castle and share their experiences. Upon returning to the Castle, Kamek sees Bowser as an adult and Bowser Jr. as his son, which brings him to tears for all the years he missed.
Gameplay
Yoshi and the Mysterious Book is a side-scrolling platformer starring Yoshi. In the game, Yoshi retains his main abilities from previous Yoshi games. He can eat creatures and objects with his tongue to create eggs, and then aim and throw them at other creatures or objects. Yoshi can also Flutter Jump and Ground Pound. A new move introduced is the Tail Flick, which lets Yoshi grab creatures and carry them on his back. While carrying a creature, Yoshi can make use of their abilities, such as using Crazee Dayzees to make flowers bloom. Other creatures instead help Yoshi traverse in new ways, such as riding on them like a surfboard or floating inside bubbles they create. Yoshi does not lose health when hit by creatures and cannot be defeated in this game.
The levels in the game are focused more towards exploration and discovery, lacking any time limit or game over. Each level is composed of a specific creature's habitat, which starts unnamed. The player's overall objective is to study this creature by discovering its traits. Traits can be discovered by interacting with the creature itself, or by using it to interact with the environment or other creatures. After completing the main goal of each habitat, the player then exits Mr. E, and the traits learned about the creature are written down in his pages. A star is awarded for each discovery, with one large discovery awarding three stars and signalling the end of the level. Afterwards, all discoveries are logged on Mr. E's pages and the creature can be named by the player or by Mr. E.
Names given by the player are subject to the following conditions: they can be up to ten characters long, cannot include words that match an entry in the Nintendo Switch system software's word filter, must not be the same name as another creature's, and are not equivalent to the name of a main character.
Smiley Flowers are scattered across Mr. E's pages. Each chapter shows how many Smiley Flowers there are for each level, as well as how many have been obtained. Finding them rewards Exploration Tools (using five to unlock a tool), interaction with the page's creatures, and puzzle-solving.
Tokens collected during levels can be used to unlock hints towards discoveries which have not been found yet. Initially, they reveal a silhouette of the discovery, but spending more tokens unlocks further details.
Chapters
The game consists of 12 chapters, and stars can be used to unlock new chapters in the book. Beating the initial six chapters displays the credits, and unlocks four additional chapters, which upon completion displays the credits again and unlocks the last two bonus chapters.

| Nintendo Switch 2 | Steve Watts, GameSpot | 7/10 | "Yoshi and the Mysterious Book is fundamentally a game about poking and prodding at the world and seeing what happens. It won’t test your precision platforming skills, but it serves as a gentle introduction for novices, and an experiment for even experienced gamers to see an audacious, expanded idea of what a platformer can be." |
| Nintendo Switch 2 | Giovanni Colantonio, Polygon | N/A | "My instinct is to say that I hope to see these ideas fully realized in a more traditional Yoshi game, but I'm not sure if that would be the right solution. Turn Yoshi and the Mysterious Book into a proper platformer where you need to use creatures' powers to solve your way through levels, and you basically have a Kirby game. What makes this unique is how contained it is, even if that's what holds it back too. It's as if you’ve been tossed into the whimsical playtesting lab Nintendo uses to poke and prod at every creature it designs for a new game — more of an extension of Super Mario Maker's creative freedom than Super Mario Bros. Wonder's meticulously designed platforming. If anything, a sequel could stand to drop the level-based structure entirely in favor of a true sandbox full of critters to be experimented on. The idea never fully hatches, but I can appreciate the playful concept it’s flutter-jumping towards with great effort. It doesn’t capture that timeless joy of experiencing World 1-1 for the first time, but it at least helps you understand how Nintendo engineers those magical moments." |
| Nintendo Switch 2 | Tom Marks, IGN | 6/10 | Yoshi and the Mysterious Book is an undeniable delight, with adorable storybook creatures that are amusing to learn about in your first, surprise-filled encounters with them. But while there's impressive variety on display, it comes at the cost of depth. Nearly all of its best ideas are left to wilt on the vine – especially one clever mechanic that could have supported an entire game on its own, but instead arrives far too late and then disappointingly disappears. Its open-ended levels certainly had me smiling, but only on my initial run through them, and the long list of potential Discoveries offers too few moments to take what you've learned and think creatively to solve a problem. That’s a significant weakness for a game that's all about experimentation. The result is the most charming video game bubble wrap you'll ever pop, and not much more. |
