Bewilder Birds are feathered dinosaur-like birds in Yoshi and the Mysterious Book. They share several design characteristics with Yoshis, including large snouts and oval eyes, and are predominantly red and turquoise-colored. Bewilder Birds appear in two forms: a juvenile form slightly smaller than Yoshi and a large adult form. Juvenile Bewilder Birds are shown to have the ability to transform into other creatures indexed in Mr. E.

Bewilder Birds were recorded in Mr. E prior to the events of the game; after Bowser Jr. comes across the information, he travels to Yoshi's Island in search of one. He continues this pursuit with Kamek throughout the game's first six chapters; in Bewilder Bird Habitat, he discards a Crazee Dayzee, which is revealed to be a disguised juvenile Bewilder Bird. This Bewilder Bird allies himself with Yoshi through the rest of the level and reunites with an adult Bewilder Bird upon the defeat of Bowser Jr. and Kamek.

A juvenile Bewilder Bird is also seen in Moon. Likewise, after rescuing Bowser Jr. and Kamek, an adult Bewilder Bird reunites with the juvenile.

The allied juvenile Bewilder Birds follow Yoshi around by flying or riding on his back. If a transformed Bewilder Bird is defeated or otherwise cannot exist in a particular location, it reverts back to its regular shape. When Yoshi eats a juvenile Bewilder Bird, it turns into a turquoise egg that releases the Bewilder Bird once thrown. Yoshi instructs the juveniles to transform and return to his side by whistling.
