Casterways are crustacean creatures that appear in Yoshi and the Mysterious Book. They have a light, yellow body with turquoise spots, an orange shell and large orange lips. They also wear a fisherman hat and carry a large, fishing rod. They are first encountered in Chapter 3: Seaside in the Casterway Habitat.
Casterways are defined by their love of fishing. By carrying one, Yoshi can use the Casterway's fishing rod to catch a fish in the water. The player can lower the line to catch fishes swimming deeper. Smaller fishes will sometimes willingly bite the line if they notice it near them. It is possible to catch several small fishes at the same time. By catching a fish, Yoshi obtains Tokens. He can also catch bigger fishes but those will always try to escape. When that happens, the fishing line turns red and has a risk of breaking if not handled well. In the Casterway Habitat, Yoshi must catch a large fish stuck in the rocks to drain the water. To complete the stage for the first time, he must catch a whopper in the main pond.
In the Casterway Habitat, the player can find a hatless Casterway living in a hut made of leaves. This particular Casterway fishes by using an apple as bait. Because it lacks a hat, it has a tired expression while fishing. One discovery involves finding a lost hat in the pond with the water current and bring it back to the hatless Casterway.
Other creatures can also bite a Casterway's fishing line like Croakaokes, Bafloonders and Upshoots. In an alternative version of the Ouchin Habitat, Yoshi must use a Casterway's fishing line to wrangle a bunch of Ouchins into a large net in the center of the stage.
Yoshi can also catch objects other than fishes. These include Winged Clouds, Smiley Flowers and Tokens that can be found in the water. In the Casterway Habitat, one discovery involves catching every Token found inside a water current. By fishing a red magnet located at the bottom of the main pond, Yoshi can catch Empty Cans that he couldn't catch otherwise.
Casterways can be eaten by Yoshi and are stated to have a "full-bodied flavor". If a Casterway is eaten, its fisherman hat drops on top of its shell before a new Casterway spawns where the previous one was eaten. Performing a Ground Pound on a Casterway makes it retreat into its shell before it re-emerges.
