Wash Squashes are light green, gourd-like creatures that appear in Yoshi and the Mysterious Book. First encountered in Chapter 8: Tallest of Trees in the Wash Squash Habitat, they are unlocked by completing the Bounseed Habitat.

The Wash Squash's main ability is to shoot water from its yellow, sprout-like mouth. While Yoshi cannot eat a Wash Squash due to its shape, he can take one in his mouth and use its water-shooting ability for various uses like making flowers bloom. Shooting water eventually wilts the Wash Squash, forcing Yoshi to spit it out (this is the only way Yoshi can spit out a Wash Squash that is already in his mouth). To replenish a dehydrated Wash Squash, Yoshi must take it back into water. He can also fully replenish a Wash Squash anytime even if it hasn't wilted yet. The water of a Wash Squash is said to be full of nutrients which makes it highly valuable to flora.

While normal Wash Squashes have one mouth, it is revealed that they used to have two mouths in ancient times. In fact, the player can find a fossilized twin-mouthed Wash Squash behind a wall of mud near the start of the Wash Squash Habitat. To revive it, the player must take it into water before using it. This prehistoric Wash Squash behaves the same as a modern Wash Squash except that it shoots two jets of water instead of one.

Wash Squashes grow on trees where they're seen hanging from a vine in their mouths. If Yoshi keeps spraying the big Wash Squash Tree found in the Wash Squash Habitat, it will produce new Wash Squashes at it grows. Yoshi can also use a Ground Pound on a normal Wash Squash on soil to bury it, making it sprout (doing a Ground Pound on another type of terrain like a leaf platform will make the Wash Squash explode instead). After doing so, he can douse it with water to make a new Wash Squash Tree that produce new Wash Squashes.

According to an ancient mural found in the Wash Squash Habitat, Wash Squashes were used by Shy Guys to create jugs. In order to do so, Yoshi must cover a Wash Squash with mud before taking it to the campfire found in the stage. Doing so turns the Wash Squash into a jug, which makes the newly-transformed Wash Squash unusable. He can also use a twin-mouthed Wash Squash or a wilted one to create other types of jugs. In fact, Yoshi must give a newly-crafted jug to the Shy Guy near the campfire to get a Smiley Flower.

In the Merry Music Festival, a Wash Squash can be used as an instrument by a Weewoo.
