Mister Encyclopedia, who goes by the shortened name Mr. E, is a titular character in Yoshi and the Mysterious Book. He is a sentient encyclopedia with eyes and a white mustache on his cover. He keeps information on many unusual creatures, although he is physically unable to read his own pages, as his eyes are on his front cover. He falls from the sky onto an island inhabited by Yoshis, and in the process forgot all the data within him about the creatures.[1] Yoshi jumps into Mr. E's pages to help Mr. E by learning about the creatures.[2] The game's levels occur within Mr. E's pages.
History[edit]
Mr. E was created in the distant past by a professor to store the creatures of the planet before the Moon crashed. His magnifying glass transported each creature into the pocket dimension within its pages, where time passes very slowly.
Prior to the events of the game, Mr. E lay sleeping in the library of Bowser's Castle when Kamek entered the room searching for him. Kamek opened the book and peered through the magnifying glass with eager curiosity. Before Mr. E could stop him, Kamek was pulled inside. Mr. E then returned to a long, deep slumber. In the present day, Bowser Jr. wanders into the library and finds Mr. E resting atop a pile of books. Upon opening him, he sees an illustration of a creature called the Bewilder Bird flying near Yoshi's Island. Bowser Jr. soon takes off for the island in the Junior Clown Car with the book in tow. Mid-flight, Mr. E awakens, shocked to find himself high in the sky aboard the flying machine. Bowser Jr. then notices the magnifying glass dangling from the book's cover, and the moment he peers through it, he's sucked inside in a flash of light, leaving Mr. E and the Junior Clown Car to crash onto the island below.

"Mr. E" is a pun on "mystery", similar to his original Japanese name.
