Mister Encyclopedia, who goes by the shortened name Mr. E, is a titular character in Yoshi and the Mysterious Book. He keeps information on many unusual creatures, although he is physically unable to read his own pages, as his eyes are on his front cover. He falls from the sky onto an island inhabited by Yoshis, and in the process forgot all the data within him about the creatures.[1] Yoshi jumps into Mr. E's pages to help Mr. E by learning about the creatures.[2]
The game's levels (which are mostly referred to as "habitats") occur within Mr. E's pages. During gameplay, Mr. E's icon will appear in the bottom-left corner of the screen, and will often commentate on new discoveries that Yoshi has found for a creature, or react to events such as encounters with Bowser Jr. and Kamek. The player can also press 
to allow Mr. E to speak, oftentimes giving hints for discoveries not found yet, or to check if a creature or its associated notes have been fully studied. After clearing Bewilder Bird Habitat for the first time, Mr. E can think up and craft various exploration tools for five Smiley Flowers each, which can be placed on the screen to show extra information about the environment around Yoshi himself.

Expositions and lore shown after viewing the credits for the first time and for completing certain levels within Mr. E's Challenges reveal information about Mr. E's origins.
Mr. E was created in the distant past by a professor to preserve the creatures of the planet before the Moon crashed onto its surface. His magnifying glass transported each creature into the pocket dimension within his pages, saving them from a terrible fate. Eventually, Mr. E ended up in the library of Bowser's Castle at some point through unknown means.
Prior to the events of the game, Mr. E was sleeping in the library when Kamek entered the room searching for him. Kamek opened the book and peered through the magnifying glass with eager curiosity. Before Mr. E could stop him, Kamek was pulled inside. Mr. E then returned to a long, deep slumber.
Yoshi and the Mysterious Book[edit]
In the present day, Bowser Jr. wanders into the library and finds Mr. E resting atop a pile of books. Upon opening him, he sees an illustration of a mythical bird-like creature flying near an illustration of a remote island that so happened to resemble Yoshi's Island. Believing the latter to be the creature's location, Bowser Jr. soon takes off for his destination in the Junior Clown Car with the book in tow. Mid-flight, Mr. E awakens, shocked to find himself high in the sky aboard the flying machine. Bowser Jr. then notices the magnifying glass dangling from the book's cover, and the moment he peers through it, he is sucked inside in a flash of light, leaving Mr. E and the Junior Clown Car to crash onto the island below.
Six Yoshis were enjoying their life on the island as per usual, when they soon stumble upon the crashed Junior Clown Car and Mr. E with his pages open. The Yoshis help Mr. E sit upright, and are then given the opportunity to help Mr. E learn about the creatures within his pages. By the end of the game, Bowser Jr. and Kamek were able to escape Mr. E's pages through a discovery portal and return to Bowser's Castle safely. Mr. E continues staying with the Yoshis to help further document the creatures, special studies and challenges that await them both.
Physical description[edit]
Mr. E is a sentient leather-cover encyclopedia with eyes, a white mustache, and a belt binding on his front cover. His "monocle" is a magnifying glass that can transport any sentient creature that looks into it inside the pocket dimension within his pages, where time passes very slowly. His pages resemble old pages found in antique books, and blank bookmarks stick out of the top of the book. In pre-rendered cutscenes and in various visual elements within his pages, various text lines appear to be indecipherable alien language resembling old handwriting.
Throughout the game, the appearance of Mr. E is used for various aspects of the game's user interface, including the pages being used to display habitats, creature discoveries, and the creature index. The bookmarks sticking out of the top display the icons of indexed creatures encountered in a chapter (or display other creatures that are encountered in an explored creature's habitat). His magnifying glass is used as a "cursor", which can be moved by the player with 
to focus on creatures moving about within a chapter's pages, swap discoveries around, or choose to rename creatures they have already named.

"Mr. E" is a pun on "mystery", similar to his original Japanese name.
