Upshoots are small, worm-like creatures with flower-like collars that appear in Yoshi and the Mysterious Book. They appear in various habitats as bugs not unlike Butterflies or Neon Bugs, albeit unidentified. Upshoots typically pop from underground in groups of four, but quickly retreat if a Yoshi approaches them, popping up from another place close by. Defeating a group of Upshoots with the help of a creature typically appears as a discovery for said creature in their respective habitats.
Yoshi gets to discover more about Upshoots in its dedicated Miniworld habitat, Magnified Upshoot. In this habitat, the Upshoots appear friendly towards the shrunken Yoshi, as they follow him around the habitat while staying grounded. If the Yoshi licks it or throws an Egg at it, the Upshoot retreats back underground, with only its face remaining aboveground. However, if Yoshi Ground Pounds it, the Upshoot springs out of the ground, shooting Yoshi upwards alongside it and allowing him to reach higher places. This reaction also allows it to hit other creatures such as Crazee Dayzees. A three-star discovery is made in this habitat when Yoshi helps the Upshoots with saving a smaller Upshoot from a swarm of magnified Bunchabees.
Naming[edit]
"Upshoot" comes from the verb "to upshoot", which means "to shoot upwards". It may also incorporate "shoot" (a young branch which has sprung up from another plant), given its plant-like appearance.
When asked for a name suggestion, Mr. E says the following:
- “It reaches skyward as it grows from the ground...so how about Upshoot?”
- —Mr. E
