Detonuts are chestnut-like creatures that appear in Yoshi and the Mysterious Book. They have a brown upper half and a orange down half. First encountered in Chapter 4: Settled Valley in the Detonut Habitat, they are unlocked by completing the Loopdecoop Habitat.

Detonuts regularly spawn from slide-like devices found in the trees and will explode after a small while. When a Detonut is about to explode, the upper half of its body will flash red with an angry expression and make a small clocking sound. Yoshi can carry a Detonut but it will still inevitably explode after a while. He can use a Detonut to destroy crates, boulders and other objects. Winged Clouds struck by a Detonut will be activated.

There are a few ways to prevent a Detonut from exploding. Any Detonut that falls in water will cool down and have a relaxed expression; removing it from the water will turn it back to normal. Another way is to drop the Detonut into a pool of mud; doing so will entirely cover the Detonut with mud and prevent it from exploding. As such, Yoshi can carry a muddy Detonut for as long as he wants unless the mud is removed. Yoshi can also use a Ground Pound on a Detonut to make it sprout, making it safe to carry around. In the Scatterpuff Habitat, it is shown that a Scatterpuff-covered Detonut cannot explode and instead creates small fireworks.

Detonuts grow inside trees. If Yoshi douses a Detonut sprout with water, it will grow into a tree where Detonut children live. Detonut children are smaller than standard Detonuts and have a green upper half. Unlike standard Detonuts, Detonut children do not explode after a small while and can be carried by Yoshi for as long as he wants. However, if a Detonut child is thrown by Yoshi, it will flash red and explode like a timed grenade. They will also explode if they roll on the ground. Detonut children have a really thick shell and are not ripe enough to have flavor. There is also a bigger variant known as the Mega Detonut. According to one discovery, Detonuts that are patient and don't explode grow into Mega Detonuts.

Regular Detonuts have a bittersweet taste. If a Detonut is hit with an Egg, it will crack its shell open and reveal the inside to be a sweet, yellow berry-like creature that can be eaten by other creatures. It is shown that if the inside of a Detonut is eaten without removing the shell, it leaves the outer shell hollow and lifeless. In fact, at the end of the Detonut Habitat, Yoshi can find one such Detonut with a hole left in its shell by an insect.

Naming[edit]

"Detonut" is a portmanteau of "detonate" (which means to explode) and "nut".

When the name is suggested by Mr. E, he says the following:

“It's a dangerous, explosive creature...so how about Detonut?”
Mr. E
