Yu Ef Ohs are flying saucer creatures that appear in Yoshi and the Mysterious Book. Yu Ef Ohs are first encountered in the Hauger Habitat, where one is seen entangled in vines. After Yoshi frees it using the Hauger, Bowser Jr. and Kamek make use of it, claiming such a craft would be useful in finding the Bewilder Bird, before engaging in combat with Yoshi and the Hauger. Kamek and Bowser Jr. use this Yu Ef Oh to fly around and drop bombs at Yoshi, but Yoshi can use the Hauger's drill jump to bounce these exploding rocks back, or attack the flying ship head-on. After enough hits, the Yu Ef Oh is destroyed, and Kamek and Bowser Jr. are defeated.
A larger, inactive Yu Ef Oh can be found in the Hauger Habitat as well, located in an underground pond covered in moss as if it has been abandoned; a Smiley Flower is located to its right in the dirt. A smaller, suction cup-shaped Yu Ef Oh is encountered in the Raven Habitat where it can be summoned by activating five musical satellites in the right order. This type of Yu Ef Oh can also be destroyed with a Ground Pound from a Raven.
The Yu Ef Oh has its own dedicated stage in Chapter 10: Moon called the Yu Ef Oh Base, which is unlocked by completing the Eleedee Habitat. At first, the Yu Ef Oh encountered in the Yu Ef Oh Base lays inactive and starts moving if Yoshi jumps on it. Once it starts moving, it will follow Yoshi around the stage while attempting to suck him up with its tractor beam. By using the tractor beam, Yoshi can easily move around the stage by "swimming" in the air. Yoshi can use this to swim inside water which he normally can't do. He can also use the Yu Ef Oh's tractor beam to move boulders blocking something in the ground.
The Yu Ef Oh's main driving point is to pull in whatever it can with its tractor beam in order to study it. As Yoshi moves around the stage, he can throw an item or a creature inside the Yu Ef Oh. When it absorbs something, a circular gauge appears next to the Yu Ef Oh to indicate how much data it acquired from the absorbed item or creature. Yoshi can then guide and connect the Yu Ef Oh to an uploading station at the center of the stage so that it can upload all the data it has gathered so far, which empties the Yu Ef Oh's own gauge. Filling the uploading station gauge is required to complete the stage.
Throwing an item or a creature inside the Yu Ef Oh results in different effects:
- If it pulls in Yoshi, it spits him out.
- If it pulls in several flowers, it makes a Flower Crown.
- If it pulls in an apple, it absorbs the apple's nutrients and leaves it drained.
- If it pulls in a hot pepper, it turns red and spins very fast, allowing it to destroy solid structures.
- If it pulls in a Watermelon, it spits out watermelon seeds.
- If it pulls in a Winged Cloud, it releases a Smiley Flower.
- If it pulls in an Egg, the Egg gets stucks and upsets the Yu Ef Oh's systems.
- If it pulls in Butterflies, it releases Tokens.
- If it pulls in a Golden Bug, it releases several Tokens.
- If it pulls in Neon Bugs, it activates its sparkle mode and starts shining.
- If it pulls in a Crazee Dayzee, it withers the Crazee Dayzee.
- If it pulls in several Mildes from a hidden Pink Pool, it creates a Mega Milde.
- If it pulls in several Flooflys, it creates a Big Floofly.
- If it pulls in an Ouchin, it removes the Ouchin's spines.
- If it pulls in a small Nep-Enut, it turns it into rain.
- If it pulls in a Loopdeecoop egg, the Loopdeecoop hatches inside the Yu Ef Oh. Throwing the newly hatched Loopdeecoop inside the Yu Ef Oh drains the Loopdeecoop's energy.
- If it pulls in a Detonut, the Detonut explodes inside the Yu Ef Oh.
- If it pulls in several Shy Guys, the Shy Guys override the Yu Ef Oh's controls and use it to return home.
- If it pulls in a Tumball, the Tumball gets stuck and will be spit out. Yoshi can use this to destroy concrete structures blocking certain passages.
- If it pulls in a Billeau, it expels the entire fog and moves fast vertically.
- If it pulls in two Blorps, it creates a new Blorp with the traits of the previously absorbed ones.
- If it pulls in the Alien's escape pod, the pod gets stuck. Yoshi can then hit the pod a few times to force it inside the Yu Ef Oh, breaking the pod and rescuing the Alien.
While they're considered creatures to fit with the game's core gameplay of studying creatures, Yu Ef Ohs still behave like machinery. While they run on autopilot, they can be manually controlled by anyone, as is evident in the fight against Bowser Jr. and Kamek in the Hauger Habitat, as well as a discovery in the Yu Ef Of Base in which a Yu Ef Oh can be overridden by formerly captive Shy Guys who use it to return home. Yu Ef Ohs can be destroyed by heavy impacts like several hits from a Hauger's drill-like face. Because Yoshi is smaller, his Ground Pounds can only stun the Yu Ef Oh for a few seconds.
Naming[edit]
"Yu Ef Oh" is a homophone of "UFO", a term applied to unidentifed flying objects like flying saucers.
When the name is suggested by Mr. E, he says the following:
