Thudds are giant creatures that appear in Yoshi and the Mysterious Book. They're green creatures with goofy eyes, large yellow lips, a large belly button and a body entirely covered with plants. The first Thudd encountered in the game lives in Chapter 2: Mountaintops in the Thudd Domain, where it almost sucks up Kamek and Bowser Jr. when they fly close to it. Another one is found in Chapter 11: Special Studies in the Short-to-Tall Roll Call stage.
At first, the Thudd in the Thudd Domain is sleeping on its back. When Yoshi approaches its face, it will suck him up before spitting him out. When Yoshi is in the Thudd's mouth, an orange cursor appears which shows which direction Yoshi will be spit out in. Following the cursor's direction, the Thudd will spit out Yoshi with great force which will allow him to destroy large rocks, tree leaves and structures found in the area. If Yoshi grabs into a swinging rope while he's flying, he will swing around in a circle while maintaining the flying force. By using this, he can then be sent flying in the direction he's facing.
To wake up the Thudd, Yoshi must feed it a large, round Heart Turnip found in an area above. Three Crazee Dayzees are seen trying to pull the turnip out with Yoshi requiring to bring two additional Crazee Dayzees to successfully pull out the vegetable. Once it's done, Yoshi must roll the Heart Turnip into the Thudd's mouth, fully waking it up. The Thudd will then stand up and follow Yoshi around the stage. If Yoshi walks close to the Thudd, it will suck him up along with anything near him. The player can then control the Thudd around the stage before spitting Yoshi out. This can be used by the player to suck up water from a pond and use it to douse flowers.
When a Thudd inhales an object, it will grow somewhere on its body. Some of the rocks in the Thudd Domain contain objects like teardrop-shaped Red Jewels, diamond-shaped White Jewels and Fish Fossils which can be eaten by the Thudd. It can also eat apples but not nuts. However, this seems to be limited to inanimate objects. While a Thudd can also inhale living creatures like Yoshi and Crazee Dayzees, it will usually spit them out as they are not easy to digest. Some exceptions include Glubbits, as a Thudd will only spit out bubbles if it eats one up, Bunchabees and Springhoppers.
Because of their huge size, Thudds can not be eaten by Yoshi. Some discoveries state that Thudds eat what they can find in the environment to grow bigger before eventually becoming mountains. On the Chapter 2: Mountaintops page and in the background of the Thudd Domain, the player can spot giant mountains which appear to be former Thudds. Some statues resembling Thudds can also be found in several stages of the game. It is unknown if those statues are former Thudds or statues simply designed after them.

Naming[edit]
"Thudd" is derived from "thud", an onomatopoeia for something heavy hitting the ground (like the footsteps of a giant creature).
When the name is suggested by Mr. E, he says the following:
- “It's mountainous in size with thunderous footfalls...so how about Thudd?”
- —Mr. E
