- “There can be no doubt—that watermelon has wings! We've spotted another unusual creature!”
- —Mr. E, Yoshi and the Mysterious Book
Bugyas are a purple, parasitic plant species resembling flies that appear in Yoshi and the Mysterious Book. They are first found in Settled Valley, in the level Bugya Habitat.
They notably are capable of taking over fruit and wearing it like armor. Bugyas that lack armor fly to the nearest fruit to equip it; if there are none nearby, they fly left and right frantically. When wearing fruit, it behaves differently based on the fruit it has equipped. If another creature is tossed at a Bugya wearing a fruit or if it is hit with an egg, the Bugya is ejected from the fruit and sent to the ground, temporarily stunned; the fruit it is wearing can also be destroyed with watermelon seeds with the same effect or with a hard seed, which instantly defeats the Bugya instead of stunning it. Stunned Bugyas can be ground pounded or hit with watermelon seeds or a hard seed to be defeated. Bugyas are additionally incapable of swimming and drown if they enter water, freeing fruit they might have had equipped.
Despite their name and appearance, Bugyas are considered plants. Swallowing a Bugya and spitting it at soil causes it to sprout and grow a new Bugya. It cannot grow a new Bugya until the previous one is defeated and the sprouts themselves can be destroyed with watermelon seeds or hard seeds. The big Bugya can also be seen growing from a large sprout.

Naming[edit]
"Bugya" is a corruption of "bug you", in reference to its pest-like behavior and its bug-like appearance.
When the name is suggested by Mr. E, he says:
This creature flies around like an insect, but it seems to be more like a type of plant... Either way, it's an incessant pest that takes over other plants...so how about Bugya?
