The Crudwurm is a massive, bipedal creature that appears in Yoshi and the Mysterious Book. It is a blue, skeletal creature that covers itself with dirt. It is only encountered in Chapter 7: Underground in the Crudwurm Domain, which is unlocked by completing the Billeau Habitat. Crudwurm appears when Kamek and Bowser Jr. are talking with Yoshi and ends up capturing the former two, rendering them petrified within its shell. As such, Yoshi must fight the giant beast to free the two Koopas.
Crudwurm mainly attacks by spitting large, round boulders made of dirt that roll on the ground. Yoshi can easily break them by throwing an Egg or doing a Ground Pound on them. Some boulders contain petrified, brown eggs that he can use like a regular egg. He can also use the large boulders as platforms to access any of the higher areas found in the Crudwurm Domain. The area on the left side of the stage has three Detonuts realxing in water while the right side has two Crazee Dayzees and some petrified eggs.
Crudwurm's trademark ability is petrification as it can turn whatever it eats into stone. If Yoshi ends up being eaten by it, he gets turned into a stone statue and must wiggle to move again. Throwing other creatures into Crudwurm's mouth has different effects. If it eats a Shy Guy, it turns it into stone. If it eats a Crazee Dayzee, the flowery creature sprouts on Crudwurm's forehead. If it eats a Detonut, the Detonut explodes from inside and damages Crudwurm's shell. According to a discovery, Crudwurm absorbs nutrients from the creatures that get encased in its shell.
Being made of dirt, Crudwurm's shell can be easily broken apart by using several tactics like throwing an Egg or performing a Ground Pound on it. Some creatures like a Slugarang and a Tumball are found stuck on Crudwurm's shell and can be freed by breaking the dirt armor, allowing Yoshi to use the saved creatures to attack. By continuously destroying Crudwurm's shell, its real, fleshy body starts to get exposed. If left untouched, Crudwurm will sometimes dive into the ground and re-emerge with some parts of its shell repaired. If Yoshi tries walking under Crudwurm's heavy armor, he gets stuck in the ground.
To rescue Kamek and Bowser Jr., Yoshi must break the parts of the shell around them. As such, it is not necessary to completely break Crudwurm's shell to complete the stage for the first time. However, it is required to completely break the shell to obtain a discovery. If Crudwurm's entire shell is destroyed, the beast turns red in embarrassment and runs to the background before exiting the stage. Thus, it is suggested that the player finds any discovery that they can before completely destroying the armor. For example, a Smiley Flower can only be obtained by climbing Crudwurm.
Naming[edit]
When the name is suggested by Mr. E, he says the following:
- “Its scrawny body is shielded by an outer shell of craggy crud...so how about Crudwurm?”
