Hufungouses are small, Amanita muscaria-like creatures that appear in Yoshi and the Mysterious Book. They have a flat, spotted blue brim with two eyes, and are often seen in the foreground, swaying back and forth while extending and retracting, typically unable to be interacted with by the Yoshis. However, the Yoshis can interact with Hufungouses after being shrunken down in the Miniworld habitat Magnified Hufungous, leading to various discoveries much like the other creatures in the Index.

In Magnified Hufungous, a Hufungous turns red as its stalk grows in length, which happens either when a Yoshi stands on top of it, or it return to its previous position. Likewise, it turn back blue when its stalk shrinks, as a result of either a Yoshi Ground Pounding on top of it, or if it hits a wall or ceiling. The way the stalk grows depends on where on its brim the Yoshi is located, allowing them to steer it into particular directions. Its sturdy brim allows a Hufungous to pick up objects and other small creatures and take them elsewhere as it grows, as well as cleaning up pathways by ricocheting water droplets in particular angles.

The Magnified Hufungous habitat also introduces tiny Hufungous buds, which can be picked up and carried by a matured Hufungous. Bringing eight of these buds to a Crazee Dayzee nets a two-star discovery, as it plants the eight buds which in turn grow into little Hufungouses with narrow brims. The same habitat also introduces a green-brimmed Hufungous, which is planted from a wall and can only grow and shrink its stalk in a horizontal fashion, as well as a yellow-brimmed Hufungous with a coiled, retracted stalk, which acts more like a trampoline if Yoshi jumps on it. Like the blue Hufungous, these variants also turn red if Yoshi stands on top of them.

Horizontally-growing Hufungouses reappear in the Mr. E's Challenges habitat Hop or Drop, in which a Yoshi must traverse a course while riding a Springhopper. As these move automatically, these Hufungouses remain red instead of green.

Naming[edit]

"Hufungous" is a portmanteau of "humongous" (in reference to its ability to grow tall, rather than its actual size), and "fungus".

When the name is suggested by Mr. E, he says the following:

“It's a fungus that grows, grows, and grows some more...so how about Hufungous?”
Mr. E
