Flooflys are creatures that appear in Yoshi and the Mysterious Book. Their bodies are composed of a fluffy, cloudlike substance with two small insectoid wings to the sides. Flooflys can be jumped on by Yoshi to be used as platforms, but they will disappear if stood on for too long. Flooflys can be seen flying in place, moving back and forth along a path, or (in the case of their level) completely stationary until Yoshi jumps on them, where they will begin to move towards the end of the stage. They can be dissipated with a Ground Pound, absorbed by Jetty Jellies (which take on any elemental effects), and are scared off by Plumebrellas.
Flooflys can be found in several variations, denoted by color and by what happens when Yoshi jumps on them. White Flooflys have no special properties, blue Flooflys create rain beneath them which can grow Smiley Flowers and bloom flower bushes, yellow Flooflys create a lightning strike beneath them which can destroy foliage, gray Flooflys create puffs of soot beneath them, and red Flooflys sprinkle a red dust beneath them.
When magnified, it is shown that Flooflys start off as small cloudy wisps which shoot out from a geyser and float towards Bunchabees, Butterflies, Golden Bugs, or Neon Bugs in order to overtake their bodies and become an adult Floofly. Their wisps act much like eggs, and will follow Yoshi until they are thrown, where they will then gently float downwards. The adult Floofly's wings are determined by which insect it is formed from, with most Flooflys seen in the game having Bunchabee wings. Yoshi can stand on the Flooflys in the magnified level indefinitely due to his smaller size.
On the Chapter 2: Mountaintops page, they are shown flying around the mountains in the background in a large circle. On the Chapter 9: Miniworld page, they are initially seen as wisps in a small glass jar before Yoshi first completes their level, where they then coalesce into an adult and can be seen flying back and forth in the sky.
