Template:Species-infobox Smeeches[1] are small spherical enemies that appear only in Super Mario Galaxy 2. They appear as pink winged creatures with two beady eyes and plump lips. "Smeech" is a portmanteau of the words "smooch" and "leech."

Description

Smeeches are first encountered in the Yoshi Star Galaxy, starting with the first mission, Saddle Up with Yoshi. They are encountered later on in the Hightail Falls Galaxy, the Haunty Halls Galaxy, the Sweet Mystery Galaxy, and the Starshine Beach Galaxy. Smeeches will flee from Mario and Luigi if they encounter them. However, if either brother is riding Yoshi, they will float towards him, eventually kissing Yoshi and attaching to his mouth. This prevents Yoshi from using his tongue or eating fruits, and they will also latch on to his mouth if Yoshi tries to eat one.

A Smeech will remain attached to Yoshi's mouth for as long as it can, even when the player uses a Launch Star. The Smeech can be defeated with a spin or a jump from the unmounted Mario or Luigi; Yoshi can also spin to remove the Smeech, causing it to vanish and drop Star Bits. If Mario or Luigi dismounts or is knocked off Yoshi, the Smeech will detach from Yoshi's mouth and begin to hover away.

Trivia

  • If the player goes into first-person mode while riding Yoshi with a Smeech attached, they will be able to see inside the Smeech, though only its lips are visible.
  • If the player collects a Power Star while riding Yoshi with a Smeech on his mouth, it appears in the "You got a Star!" scene.
  • Smeeches behave in a very similar manner as Leaps from the Kirby series.
