The Star Door

Star Doors are doors in Peach's Castle that appeared in Super Mario 64 and its sequel Super Mario 64 DS. Like most locked doors in the game, a certain amount of power stars must be obtained before they can be opened (although Star Doors require many more stars than regular doors). Once unlocked, the doors will slide open allowing Mario to enter.

Four star doors exist in the game.

  1. The first floor door guards the first battle with Bowser. Eight stars are required to open it (twelve in DS)
  2. The door in the basement requires 30 stars to open and holds Dire, Dire Docks and Bowser in the Fire Sea behind it.
  3. The next door is on the floor above the lobby at the top of the stairs. 50 Stars are needed and behind it are many other levels.
  4. The final door leads to the final battle with Bowser. It needs 70 stars (80 in DS) to be unlocked.

Trivia

  • If Mario attempts to open the final door without 70 powerstars, Bowser will leave a message and the doors will open. Mario will enter but reach the Endless Stairway. (Note: a glitch to bypass the endless stairway will allow Mario to enter the final level).
  • In the remake, if the final door is attempted to be opened by anyone other than Mario (80 powerstars or not), they will still encounter the Endless Stairway.
