Luigi testing the Dark-Light Device in Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon
“I call it the Dark-Light Device. It's a nifty little doodad able to break illusions, such as objects that have been turned invisible.”
Professor E. Gadd, Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon

The Dark-Light Device (also simply known as Dark-Light or Dark Light[1]) is an add-on to the Poltergust in Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon and Luigi's Mansion 3. When the Dark-Light Device is in use, Luigi's flashlight emits a rainbow-colored light in the direction he is pointing it.

History

Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon

The Dark-Light Device can reveal Polterpup tracks.

In this game, the Dark-Light Device is an add-on to the Poltergust 4000. Using the Dark-Light Device, Luigi can see objects that are hidden in a manner similar to an ultraviolet lamp. After shining the Dark-Light Device on these objects, Luigi needs to vacuum the Spirit Balls that are revealed to make the objects visible again. The Dark-Light Device is also used to reveal Polterpup tracks so Luigi can follow them, Boo trails to follow a Boo, and Toads, coins, or gems trapped in paintings. Additionally, Luigi is able to use the Dark-Light Device on ghosts such as Greenies and Sneakers. Sneakers are revealed when hit by the light, while Greenies start to taunt Luigi. The Dark-Light Device is also required to free Mario from his painting.

The Dark-Light Device has an energy gauge that is a rainbow-colored meter in the top right corner. If the Dark-Light Device is used for too long, it overheats. The gauge can be upgraded by Professor E. Gadd by collecting treasure and leveling up.

In the ScareScraper, Spirit Balls do not come out of revealed furniture. Also, if one Luigi has been cursed, other Luigis can use their Dark-Light Devices on him to remove the curse.

Luigi's Mansion 3

In this game, the Dark-Light Device is an add-on to the Poltergust G-00 and has the same use. It is used by pressing X Button, and it can be held indefinitely without overheating. It can also reveal purple Spirit Balls that are possessing furniture once they are stunned.
