Poltergust is the name given to a series of inventions by Professor E. Gadd in the Super Mario franchise, most prominently in the Luigi's Mansion series. It is a series of red ghost-catching devices that resemble backpack vacuum cleaners and are mainly used by Luigi. They are based on the Proton Pack from the Ghostbusters franchise. Each of these devices can be used to suck in ghosts and other objects or blow them away, and possesses a flashlight that takes the place of the nozzle when the latter is not in use. Gooigi can manipulate his body to form a copy of the Poltergust that he uses.[1]
In the Super Smash Bros. series, starting with Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, Luigi uses the Poltergust as his Final Smash, in which he uses it to suck up nearby opponents and items and launch them back out.
Main versions[edit]

The Poltergust 3000 is the original version of the Poltergust first seen in Luigi's Mansion. It takes the form of a red vacuum cleaner that can be strapped to a person's back. By sucking Elemental Ghosts, the Poltergust 3000 is also able to spew fire, water and ice. In the Luigi's Mansion remake for the Nintendo 3DS, the Poltergust 3000 can be given the ability to use the Strobulb function first seen in Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon. |

The Poltergust 5000 is an upgraded version of the Poltergust 3000 first seen in Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon. Compared to its original iteration, the Poltergust 5000 cannot stun ghosts with its flashlight, and must make use of the Strobulb feature for that purpose. It can also be fitted with a Dark-Light Device, which is able to reveal objects hidden by Spirit Balls. When sucking ghosts, the Poltergust 5000 can also perform a more powerful attack known as a Power Surge by charging up a meter. |

The Poltergust G-00, also known as the Poltergust 7000, is the latest version of the Poltergust, first seen in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, but mainly featured in Luigi's Mansion 3. It retains all basic functions from the Poltergust 5000, although it can now be used to slam ghosts into the ground by charging a meter. It also features the addition of the Suction Shot ability, which allows Luigi to fire suction cups, and the Burst ability, which allows Luigi to jump while blowing away enemies. The Poltergust G-00's main new ability comes in the form of Gooigi, a gooey clone of Luigi that stored in the device. Additionally, after obtaining the Super Suction, plugging the Poltergust G-00 into special electrical sockets found in certain areas allows Luigi to suck up objects that he normally cannot. |
Other Poltergusts[edit]
In addition to the three main models featured in the Luigi's Mansion series, other models of Poltergust have appeared within the franchise:
- PolterGust 1000™: A device whose suction is used in the PolterCue game to move a billiard ball on a table.[2]
- Super Poltergust 3001: An upgraded version of the Poltergust 3000 capable of flying briefly seen in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga and its remake.
- Poltergust 4000: A kart that first debuted in Mario Kart DS.
- Ice-blue Poltergust: A blue variant of the Poltergust 4000 from Mario Kart Tour.
- Poltergust G-00 (kart): A kart based on the Poltergust G-00 from Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit.
