The wearable Spiny Shell is a course part that appears throughout the Super Mario Maker games. It is usable in all four standard game styles, but not the Super Mario 3D World style in Super Mario Maker 2. Unlike standard Spiny Shells, the course part is hollow, lacking an underside and not containing a Spiny. This allows the shell to be worn by Mario as a helmet. In Super Mario Maker and Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS, the Spiny Shell can be obtained by shaking a Spiny. In Super Mario Maker 2, it is instead able to be selected from a drop-down menu while selecting a Spiny. Hollow Spiny Shells behave much like occupied Spiny Shells, as they can be kicked, picked up, and thrown. Hollow Spiny Shells exclusively rest with their spikes upwards unlike standard Spiny Shells, which can be obtained with their spikes facing up, and thus are always harmful to jump on. They also can be placed directly into Pipes, Bill Blasters, ? Blocks, and be given Parachutes, as they are a separate part in Course Maker. Hollow Spiny Shells also cannot wake up into normal Spinies, and will always remain in place unless acted upon.

Spiny Shells can be equipped either by touching it from below, or by crouching while holding one. SMB2 Mario cannot pick up a Spiny Shell, as standing on it removes the form, so Spiny Shells can only be equipped by contact from below in the Super Mario Bros. game style. Equipping a Spiny Shell puts Mario into the Spiny Mario form. This form grants an extra hit of damage on top of any standard power up, as the Spiny Shell instead absorbs the damage and falls off the screen. In addition, Spiny Mario can also survive most attacks from above without taking any damage. Instead, the enemy is usually defeated or damaged. Spiny Mario is also capable of destroying Brick Blocks, Rotating Blocks, ? Blocks, Empty Blocks, Ice Blocks, Hard Blocks, and Frozen Coins by jumping into them from below. Breaking Brick Blocks, Rotating Blocks, or ? Blocks containing objects will not release their contents, but breaking a Frozen Coin will earn the coin.
