"Player Down,"[1] also known as "Lost a Life,"[2] is a musical theme composed by Koji Kondo for Super Mario Bros., where it plays if the player loses a life. Similarly to "Game Over", it is a brief arrangement of "Ground BGM" from the same game.

CompositionEdit

"Player Down" is an arranged excerpt of "Ground BGM" taken from the last several notes of the theme before it loops. Koji Kondo's idea behind this theme was to motivate players to try again, rather than using sounds that would otherwise discourage them.[3][4]
