An early screenshot shows an early version of the "Peach's face" screen, which ended up on the bottom screen, to be on the top screen, without Heart Panels, with a solid bright green background and with a different design for Peach.

The Party Ball is a different design.
Peach's tears appear as large spheres, rather than the continuous stream seen in the final game.

Early backgrounds of Hoo's Wood, Ladida Plains and Giddy Sky. The stages look nearly identical to the final ones, but some of the enemy positions are different. Also, in the second screenshot, there are some numbers in the bottom-right corner.
