Appears in Super Mario Bros. ("Minor Defects") (1991)

Clarence is a Shyguy appearing in the Super Mario Bros. comic "Minor Defects." He is one of King Koopa's Shyguy minions, acting as a guard for his castle; he is the only Shyguy to not defect against King Koopa when the other Shyguys believe that they have not received their fruit baskets for Be-Kind-to-Lackeys Day.

Clarence first appears when Princess Toadstool points that there is only one Shyguy guarding the entrance to King Koopa's castle, where he can be seen standing in the doorway of the castle while holding a spear. A Shyguy tells the Princess that all of the Shyguys hate him, to which Mario responds by telling them to attack him. However, they are unwilling to even touch him, as they claim that he has cooties. As a result, Mario, his friends, and the Shyguys decide to build a watchtower over Koopa's castle as Clarence guards the gate to the castle.

Three days later, King Koopa, tired of waiting for Mario and the 8 bits to storm his castle, decides to go out and reason with them, knocking Clarence out of the way. After Mario and the Princess are asked about what happened to the fruit baskets, Clarence speaks up, saying that he knows where the fruit baskets went, but refuses to tell him because he never asked him. King Koopa furiously asks him why he will not tell him, to which he replies that he only yells at him, explaining that he does everything else. As Mario and his friends retreat back to the Mushroom Castle, Koopa explains that he does not hate him, but that everything that he does makes him angry, to which Clarence replies that he would like him if he looked better.
