Hidden e-Reader levels[edit]

Levels for the game's e-Reader mode, Mario vs. Donkey Kong-e, were designed for both the North American and Japanese version of the game. The e-Reader mode is normally hidden on the file select screen; however, by modifying each version of the game using hacks, the mode can be enabled to reveal a preloaded list of e-Reader levels.

There are a total of 13 level entries in the North American version (also called e World) and 14 in the Japanese version (named Card e-+). For the Japanese levels with released e-Reader cards, the last two digits of the card's ID number denotes its place among the 14 preloaded levels. Because the game was developed by the American division of Nintendo Software Technology Corporation, almost all of the North American levels appear to be prototypes of the levels available in the Japanese release, which came out weeks later. The two versions' levels are in different orders, and all the Japanese levels have been edited to varying degrees. Most of the differences are minor, with a few levels having major differences between regions. Two levels were removed from the Japanese version, while three new ones were added.

North American menu screens[edit]

Since no e-Reader cards for the game were released in North America, the e-Reader mode in that region can only be accessed by hacking the game.

An incomplete level editor exists in the game's code, and it can be accessed by hacking. Some elements are broken, and it is not possible to save a created level. A fully realized level editor would later appear as the Construction Zone in Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2: March of the Minis.
