The Sledge Bros. first appeared in Super Mario Bros. 3 in Giant Land, where they replaced Hammer Bros. in the area's levels and map. If a Sledge Bro. sees Mario or Luigi, it will try to attack them by throwing sledge hammers at them; additionally, whenever a Sledge Bro. jumps and lands on the ground, it creates a miniature earthquake which can paralyze Mario. To defeat a Sledge Bro., Mario could either jump on it, hit it with a Shell, hit it with a fireball as Fire Mario or a hammer as Hammer Mario.

Sledge Bros. made several appearances in The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3, where they were among the elite of King Bowser Koopa and the Koopalings' military forces. They were generally portayed as fairly tough soldiers, and managed to pose as major enemies to Mario, Luigi, Princess Toadstool and Toad in many episodes. Much like in the game, Sledge Bros. were able to cause tremors by jumping.
