*Oerlikons are most likely named after Oerlikon Contraves, a Swiss anti-aircraft artillery manufacturer and its most famous product, the Oerlikon 20 mm anti-aircraft gun. The naming choice is probably explained by Oerlikons' spikes being capable to stop Mario's jumping attacks, thus acting as air defence in a way.
