Sprites.

Check and X Barrels[1] are special types of barrels that appear in Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest. The Check Barrels help the Kongs, while the X ones hinder them. These appear in a few levels with a Skull Cart. In Target Terror, they act as switches to open gates that are in the way. Haunted Hall features a similar type of Barrel, the Plus and Minus Barrels.

Trivia

  • The manual's description of the two barrels incorrectly refers to the Check Barrels as "U Barrels."
  • In Donkey Kong 64, there are green and red bells in Fungi Forest's mine cart section which have same function.
