Hero Sight

Hero Sight refers to a set of Techniques in the Mario + Rabbids series. While the term "Hero Sight" refers to Mario's Technique in particular, other characters have their own variations for the Technique. Hero Sight is a proc that allows characters to attack opponents, during the opponent's turn, who are moving within their line of sight, dealing damage to them, as well as inflict Super Effects to them.

History[edit]

Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle[edit]

Hero Sight first appears in Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, where Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, and Yoshi have the Technique. Luigi has "Steely Stare", Peach "Royal Gaze", and Yoshi "Egg Beater". The Heroes can upgrade their reaction-based Techniques in the Skill Tree, where upgrades can be purchased to increase the damage, reduce the cooldowns, and to add more attacks. In the Donkey Kong Adventure Downloadable Content, Donkey Kong and Rabbid Cranky have Techniques known as "Hairy Eye" and "Stink Eye" respectively, which are also reaction-based attacks. While the effects of Hero Sight are usually beneficial when triggered, if players are not careful, it can activate to cause Smashers to change path and move toward the character that shot the Smasher. This grants the Smasher one more attack in the same turn (or two more if Hero Sight procs twice), which can be devastating, potentially KO'ing even healthy heroes in one turn in later levels, due to Smashers' high attack stats.

Status effects that force characters to move including Burn, Bounce, and Push can trigger Hero Sight.

Hero Sight[edit]

Mario is usually the first character available to use Hero Sight. Unlike other variations of the move, Mario's Hero Sight does not have an aim or critical hit penalty. With upgrades, Mario's Hero Sight may outdamage Mario's normal ranged attacks, dealing 130% of a standard primary attack.

Steely Stare[edit]

Luigi's Steely Stare, unlike Mario's Hero Sight, comes with a damage penalty whenever it is triggered (70% of normal damage). To make up for it, the upgrades for Steely Stare may allow Luigi to proc up to three times while benefiting from Luigi's unparalleled movement and range.

Royal Gaze[edit]

Princess Peach's Royal Gaze is not as potent as Hero Sight or Steely Stare, allowing her to proc only once and it works off Peach's more limited range. Since Peach is using the Boomshot, a short ranged weapon that inflicts damage on all targets, she risks friendly fire if she is not in the front lines.

Egg Beater[edit]

Similar to Mario's Hero Sight, Yoshi can upgrade his Technique to have it outdamage his standard attack, except with even greater damage, with a maximum of 150% damage of a standard attack. He can only have one proc however, unlike Mario's Hero Sight.

Hairy Eye[edit]

Donkey Kong's Hairy Eye allows him to perform one reaction attack with up to 150% damage to his target and any other enemies within ricochet range.

Stink Eye[edit]

Rabbid Cranky's Stink Eye is similar to Princess Peach's Royal Gaze, dealing damage in a cone radius with the power dropping off the farther away enemies are. At its full potential, Rabbid Cranky can perform two reaction-based attacks with 100% damage. Due to the Boombow functioning identically to the Boomshot, Rabbid Cranky also risks friendly fire with his reaction shots.

Villain Sight[edit]

Many enemies also have the Technique, in which it is known as "Villain Sight". Below is a list of enemies that have a form of Villain Sight and the Super Effects they can cause:

Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope[edit]

In Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope, Hero Sight returns, and the heroes Mario, Luigi, and Edge have it. The names are still "Hero Sight" for Mario and "Steely Stare" for Luigi, but Edge's Technique is known as Stormblade, which strikes all enemies around Edge when an enemy moves, even those who do not move. In the Skill Trees, each hero has unique upgrades for their Technique.

For Mario, there are upgrades that increase the damage, reduce the cooldown, add another charge, and an upgrade that allows Mario to gain a bonus charge if an enemy is defeated by the Technique. For Luigi, there are upgrades that increase the damage, reduce the cooldown, add additional charges, and to allow Luigi to shoot through all terrain. For Edge, there are upgrades that increase the damage, increase the range, add an additional charge, and a defensive upgrade that reduces the damage done to Edge by 50% while Stormblade is active. Lone Wolves and the Phantom in his Final Phantom Form have reaction-based attacks, known as "Evil Sight" and "Fright Sight" respectively. The former has no effects, but the latter disables attacks, Techniques, Spark powers and costume abilities upon contact.

Notes[edit]

  • The name for Luigi's Technique, "Steely Stare", is based on the "Luigi's Death Stare" meme from Mario Kart 8.
  • Hero Sight is similar to the Overwatch skill in the XCOM series. Due to this, players in the Mario + Rabbids communities may casually call Hero Sight "Overwatch".
