The Sensoji Temple (Japanese: 浅草寺; Rōmaji: Sensō-ji) is a temple in Tokyo, Japan. To enter it, one must pass under the "Thunder Gate". During the events of the game Mario is Missing!, Koopa Troopas stole the red Sensoji Temple Lantern that usually hangs on the Gate. Luigi had to search for it in the city, and when he found it, he could return the paper lantern, receiving a prize of 1,755 dollars. The temple also appears in the Tokyo Blur courses in Mario Kart Tour and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

The Sensoji Temple in the Asaku District of Tokyo was built in 640 AD. To enter the temple grounds, you must first pass under The Gate of Thunder, an elaborately carved arch on which hangs the giant red paper lantern sacred to the temple and its worshipers. Built in the shape of a traditional pagoda, smaller red lanterns line the arcades of the walls. The giant red lantern casts a rosy glow and lights the way for temple visitors.
