Plot synopsis[edit]
A long time ago, a stork hurries across the sky against the sunrise over Yoshi's Island, with the babies he carries, Baby Mario and Baby Luigi having been foretold to have a great future ahead of them. Suddenely, Kamek, hiding behind a cloud, spots the stork and snatches the babies from his bill, exclaiming that they are now his as the stork cries for help. He then flies back to Bowser's Castle on his broom with the two babies in tow as he comments that they will not cause trouble for them any longer. However, he accidentally drops one of the bags, which falls and lands on Yoshi's head as he walks on a trail on Yoshi's Island while commenting about the fair weather, having recently just woken up. Opening the bag, Yoshi finds that it contains Baby Mario. He then picks up the baby as he remarks that there was not supposed to be rain today. Yoshi is then hit on the head by a scroll; unfolding the scroll, Yoshi realizes that it is a map, and wonders if it shows where Baby Mario was supposed to be going.
Meanwhile, at Bowser's Castle, Kamek is furious that Baby Mario escaped. He explains to his minion Toadies that a prophecy warns that the babies will bring disaster on the Koopa Clan, explaining that they will be a threat once they become adults. He then orders the Toadies to find Baby Mario and bring him to the castle, telling them to search everywhere as Baby Luigi begins crying.
At the same time, Yoshi has informed his friends about his discovery, and they all gather around Baby Mario in interest. Red Yoshi comments that he is such a strange creature, making strange noises, while Light-blue Yoshi wonders if he is delicious. Yellow Yoshi comments that he could be used to ride, though Purple Yoshi exclaims that he is a baby and was delivered to the wrong person. Brown Yoshi questions Purple Yoshi's explanation, saying that the stork never makes makes, though Red Yoshi adds that he may have made a mistake this time. Blue Yoshi says that it does not matter how he came here; they need to return him to his rightful parents. However, Yellow Yoshi says that they do not know where Baby Mario lives, explaining that they can be anywhere.
As the Yoshis struggle to understand what Baby Mario is saying, Yellow Yoshi comments that they at least have a map and that the parents must be on the island, but does not know where. Suddenly, Yoshi notices a note on the side of Baby Mario's cap; taking the note, Yoshi finds that the note reads that the stork needs to deliver Baby Mario and Baby Luigi to their parents. Realizing that there are two babies, Yoshi asks his friends if they want to help in looking for Baby Luigi, to which they respond in the affirmative, adding that they will swap out with him when he becomes tired. With this, the Yoshis and Baby Mario set off to look for Baby Luigi.
Meanwhile, in the sky, the Toadies are struggling to find Baby Mario until one spots him on Yoshi's back. One of Toady tries to lunge towards Baby Mario but misses, hitting its head. Yoshi comments that the Toadies do not seem to be very friends and certainly do not like Baby Mario's parents. With this, Yoshi runs away from the Toadies with Baby Mario in tow, hoping to escape the Toadies before they come too close.
While running away, Yoshi hits his head on a Message Block, who immediately asks who bumped into it. Finding that Yoshi bumped into it, the Message Block explains that he many types of useful information for him. Yoshi asks the Message Block if it can find some way to get rid of Toad, explaining that they are bothersome; the Message Block explains that he cannot escape them, but adds that he should not worry; as long he has the power of the stars, no-one can take away Baby Mario. As Yoshi is touched by a Shy Guy, the Message Block continues by saying that Baby Mario can be taken away if Yoshi is caught by a trap or an enemy; when this happens, Baby Mario will float away in a Bubble. A timer then begins counting down, showing how much time he has left to rescue him as Yoshi tries to save Baby Mario.
Meanwhile, up above, the Toadies plan to capture Mario as soon as the timer runs out. As the Message Block urges Yoshi to hurry up in rescuing Baby Mario, Yoshi says that he has too high for him to reach. Suddenly, Yoshi extends his tongue, popping the Bubble Baby Mario is in and rescuing him at the last second, with the Toadies expressing frustration at his success. Grabbing Baby Mario, Yoshi says that he forgot how far his tongue could stretch.
Though relieved that the Toadies cannot grab Mario while protected by the stars, Yoshi comments that he should probably extend their protection saying that ten seconds is a little short. The Message Box then explains to Yoshi, that, though the star protection normally starts at "9", it can be extended if he find certains star symbols. The Message Box continues by explaining that this also happen when he jumps through a Middle Ring; it not only functions as a checkpoint, it also extends his time.
Yoshi then across another Shy Guy. As he panics, the Message Block tells him to remain calm and grab it with his tongue; grabbing the Shy Guy, Yoshi swallows it and lays an egg. Yoshi is surprised by this, as he though that only females lay eggs. Regardless, Yoshi comments that now he has something to throw and throws the egg at a Wild Piranha. As the Message Block compliments him for using the egg to defeat the Wild Piranha, Yoshi wonders if he should use his eggs to attack enemies, explaining that he will have to lay many eggs. The Message Block continues that eggs are useful for other things, such as collecting items and breaking through walls. Finding this to be exciting, Yoshi prepares a large stock of eggs to be safe.
The Message Block continues by explaining that there are other techniques he can perform, such as Flutter Jumping and Stomping. It then continues by explaining that, if he does not swallow and enemy, he can spit them out. Excited about his abilites, Yoshi comments that he is a "Super-Yoshi"; however he fails to notice a Shy Guy who touches him, causing Baby Mario to float away in a Bubble again. As Yoshi chases after Baby Mario, complaining about not paying attention again, the Message Block tells the reader that he still has much to learn.
The Message Block spots a pair of coins in front of Yoshi and asks him to collect them. However, Yoshi is hesistant, explaining that he cannot reach them, though the Message Block reminds him to remember his skills and has three ways to retrieve the coins: He can grab the coins with his tongue, Flutter Jump to them, or use an egg to collect them. Using each of these techniques, Yoshi manages to collect the coins.
After collecting the coins, Yoshi notices that one of them is red, the Message Block explains that they are important for the points table at the end of the level. Showing the table, it explains that it lists all of the important items Yoshi found in the level, explaining that the level contains 30 Stars, 20 red coins, and five Special Flowers, though adds that Yoshi did not find everything in the level. It continues by explaining his final score is calculated from the things he finds, in his case, 79 points.
Yoshi says that he knows about stars and coins, but does not know what the flower is. A Special Flower then suddenly appears and explains to him that, with its help, he will have the chance to play a Bonus Challenge at the end of a level. It then explains that five Special Flowers are hidden in each level, and that every Special Flower that he finds results in a Special Flower symbol being released into the Goal Ring. When Yoshi jumps into the ring at the end of the level, the Special Flower roulette is activated; if the light ends on a Special Flower, he can play a Bonus Challenge. Yoshi realizes that, the more Special Flowers that he finds, the greater his chance of being able to play a Bonus challenge.
The Special Flower continues by explaining that there are six different Bonus Challenges; with skill and luck, he can win many extra lives. One game is Scratch and Match, where Yoshi has to reveal Baby Marios. Another game is Roulette, where he makes a bet and tests his luck, with Yoshi exclaim that he always wanted to play roulette, saying that he hopes that his luck will hold out.
In front of a Key Door, Yoshi notes that the door has a keyhole, but he does not have a key. The Message Block notes that the key to the door is hidden somewhere in the level. Yoshi asks where the key is, explaining that he does not want to have to search everywhere; in response, the Message Block and Special Flower tell him to check a nearby vase. Finding the key in the vase, Yoshi uses it to open the door, which leads to a Mini Battle. As Yoshi wonders what is behind the door, the Message Block explains that there is a Mini Battle, explaining that he can win useful items if he beats his opponent.
In an open fields, Yoshi comments that are many strange things that he needs to get used to as the Message Block comments that the strangest thing is "this frog with a baby on his back" (a pun on Kröte, colloquially used to refer to a brazen child). Coming across an Expansion Block, Yoshi, believing it to be a ? Block, hits it, only to be surprised when the block only expands. The Message Block explains that, with the expanded block, Yoshi can reach items that he could not reach before, with Yoshi exclaiming that he can now collect all of the coins above the block.
Yoshi then comes across a Chomp Rock, with him commenting that everything here has use and that the stone must have one as well. As Yoshi decides to roll the Chomp Rock around, the Message Block explains that it will open new paths for him. He then comes across a Winged Cloud, and the Message Block explains that, if he hits the cloud with an egg, he can receive either coins, stars, or Special Flowers. Finding this exciting, Yoshi decides to launch an egg at the cloud, which drops down and turns into a staircase; climbing the staircase, Yoshi finds several coins and a Special Flower. As Yoshi exclaims that he and Baby Mario are now wealthy, the Message Block comments that there are many secrets on Yoshi's Island.
Later, coming across a steep hill, Yoshi tells the reader that he cannot go any further, explaining that the hill is too steep and asking the reader what he should do. Coming across a Spring Ball, Yoshi wonders why the artist drew an arrow here. He then steps on the arrow, being propelled into the sky and landing on the top of the hill. Dazed from the upward motion, he is surprised that the arrow was a catapult and comments that he is about to faint.
Later, Yoshi comes across a Warp Pipe and, relieved at finding something familar, enters it, commenting that whatever is down the pipe cannot be any worse than what is above. Traveling down the pipe, Yoshi finds a waterfall-filled cave. After drinking some of its water and rolling on a Chomp Rock to collect some coins, Yoshi comes across a tulip. Fascinated by this, Yoshi asks the Message Block what he should do with it; it responds by saying that the tulip also has a special purpose, telling him to throw something into it. The Message Block then shows the viewer the different items that they can find in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, including stars, melons, POW Blocks, Egg Blocks, Magnifying Glasses, and Winged Cloud Makers. It adds that one can store up to three items in the menu.
Leaving the cave, Yoshi comments that it was time to leave, as it was beginning to become stuffy in the cave. Noticng that he only has two eggs, Yoshi suggests that he should restock by swallowing a few enemies. However, the Message Block points out that it is unneccessary; pointing to an Egg Block in front of him, it explains that, if he hits the block, it releases eggs that Yoshi can use to refill his stock. Yoshi then hits the block and is surprised by the differently colored eggs; the Message Block explains that, if he hits an enemy or wall with the differently colored eggs, they will turn into an item.
Yoshi then realizes that, being preoccupied with eggs, they failed to notice the enemies now surrounding them. The Message Block tells him not to worry, saying that it will save before tossing him a Super Star. Grabbing the Super Star, Yoshi is disappointed when it turns Baby Mario into Superstar Mario, as he had hoped that it would turn him invincible. With this power, Superstar Mario easily defeats the swarm of enemies, with Yoshi, as an egg, dismayed that he is the hero. Superstar Mario runs up a wall before using his cape as parachute to land on the ground. Now on the ground, Yoshi, no longer an egg, compliments Baby Mario, saying that he could not have handled it better himself.
Later, Yoshi meets his replacement, Red Yoshi, who he is excited to meet, explaining that he has been through many things. Red Yoshi says that he deserves a good rest, saying that she will take care of Baby Mario. Yoshi bids farewell to the two as the two walk off, with Red Yoshi noting that the Toadies are still after them, hovering in the sky. Red Yoshi then enters the level Watch Out Below!, where she runs away from an Incoming Chomp. The following pages shows the different forms of Yoshi in the game, including Helicopter Yoshi, Car Yoshi, Submarine Yoshi, the Train, and the Mole Tank.
The following two pages show the levels Burt The Bashful's Fort and Touch Fuzzy, Get Dizzy. In Burt the Bashful's Fort, Yellow Yoshi throws an egg at Burt the Bashful as he comments that the have "gotten on his last nerves". In Touch Fuzzy, Get Dizzy, Pink Yoshi is seen experiencing the effects of touching a Fuzzy, with the background becoming twisted.
Later, Yoshi, taking care of Baby Yoshi again, prepares to ride Poochy as the Message Block explains that he is his friend and can carry him over hazardous areas. Mounting Poochy, Yoshi comments that he hopes that he has already had breakfast.
The next pages show the experiences of the other Yoshis. Yellow Yoshi is terrified by the ghost enemies in either a fortress or castle, though Baby Mario finds them funny. Kamek comments that he has made far in his quest to rescue Baby Luigi, but taunts him to give up, saying that he will never reach Luigi, who is locked up in Bowser's Castle. Light-blue Yoshi stomps on a post as he remarks that nothing will stop them from freeing Baby Luigi, with a Blargg in the background. He then transforms into Helicopter Yoshi and Submarine Yoshi; as Helicopter Yoshi, he remarks that, as this form, he can cross large chasms, but needs a good pilot. Purple Yoshi can be seen spitting an egg to defeat a Wild Piranha.
Later, Yoshi, taking care of Baby Mario once again, is looking at the map, noting that he is not even halfway through the island, commenting that it is very large. Suddenly, Baby Mario starts crying, with Yoshi wondering if he is hungry again. He then realizes that he want him to keep moving, asking if he wants to show him something. Once Yoshi reaches a field surrounded by crystals, Kamek appears to taunt Yoshi, saying that he has made it to Bowser's Castle, but he will never reach it, for he will stop him. The comic ends with the narrator asking if Yoshi will reach the castle, what will happen to Luigi, and whether Baby Mario and Baby Luigi will meet their parents, saying that the only person who can answer the questions is the reader, telling them to buy the game.
