Plot synopsis[edit]

Mario has always had the dream of being a private detective, interesting solving mysterious cases, meeting attractive women, and swimming in money. His dream can now become a reality, as he found an advertisement in the newspaper for a vacant position at a detective agency. Immediately, Mario sets off for his future workplace.

Arriving at his workplace, which is currently for rent, Mario finds a fish in a fishbowl on a desk. The fish explains that he is no ordinary fish, saying that it is the Blaufisch. The Blaufisch explains that his previous owner left him on the desk, suggesting that he change his water and buy him a larger fishbowl. Mario explains that he wants to be a detective, not a fish farmer, though the Blaufisch says that he can be very useful to him, explaining that he was his predecessor's assistant and he can do anything for him. Mario is excited by this offer and immediately accepts it, opening his own detective agency, Marioso, a few days later.

Now owning his own detective agency, Mario decides to take the Blaufisch to a place where he has more space to swim in, with the Blaufisch wondering if it is a built-in hot tub. Mario guides him to a toilet, to the fish's surprise, saying that it is not what he expected. As the Blaufisch explains that it is toilet and not a hot tub to Mario, Mario says that it can act as a wave pool, turning the toilet handle and flushing the Blaufisch down the drain as he screams for help. After flushing the Blaufisch down the toilet, Mario hopes that he did not clog up the toilet.

Suddenly, a voice asks if they can come into the agency, and Mario, hoping that they are an attractive woman, opens the door. However, to his surprise, the guest introduces herself as Ursel, offering Mario some of her cake. Mario is surprised by this, and Ursel explains that she is the dietary advisor of Dr. Light, the inventor of the Game Boy Camera. She explains that the doctor has been behaving strangely since his prototype was stolen, suggesting that it upset him so much that he lost his mind. Ever since the theft, he has been kept in a padded cell. Mario and Ursel then head off to the hospital that Dr. Light has been admitted to, posing as a doctor and nurse, respectively.

In his cell, Dr. Light make strange gestures and noises as Ursel comments that he "left his brain at the door". Mario comments that it is a strange as the photos he had with him, explaining that, before the camera was stolen, he was able to print images that appear to show UFOs, but does not know what they have to him. He says that he hopes to find out, if he is given a piece of Ursel's chocolate cake.

Mario is later walking down a street, commenting that he should he though twice about becoming a detective if he knew that his first case would be so difficult, considering becoming a fish breeder. Suddenly, the Blaufisch pops out of a drain, furious about having been flushed down the toilet. However, after a short time, the two are back on speaking terms, and are now at the Blaufischbar, discussing Mario's current case. Seeing the photos, the Blaufisch realizes that they are UFOs, and deduces that the Game Boy Camera is now in the hands of aliens, saying that they have merely flown away with it. Mario surprised by this, the Blaufisch explains that Dr. Light was making those gestures to tell him that the aliens have escaped with the camera in a UFO. Mario realizes that they must go after them, and the two head off to space in a spaceship.

In space, the Blaufisch spots a spaceship resembling Kirby, with Mario noting its resemblance to him. Mario and the Blaufisch then step aboard the spaceship. Aboard the spaceship, the Blaufisch spots a photo on the wall that makes him nervous, to which Mario notes that it appears to have been taking with the Game Boy Camera. They then spot the camera floating in midair, with Mario wondering how it is possible. Suddenly, a giant shadow appears on the wall, frightening the two. As Mario and Blaufisch fear about being eaten by the "monster", the Game Boy Camera lands in Kirby's hand before he greets Mario and the Blaufisch.

Kirby explains that he borrowed the camera, explaining that it would be perfect for his flying detective agency. He then explains that he works in space, protecting the Earth from aliens. Kirby hopes that Mario and the Blaufisch will forgive him, explaining that he has much success with the camera, showing various photos of UFOs. He also explains that he took some photos of aliens, explaining that, though some of the aliens were malicious, other aliens that he talked with were friendly, even exchanging recipes with some of them. Mario explains that it is amazing, but also adds that, since Kirby took the Game Boy Camera, Dr. Light has gone mad, with Blaufisch adding that he is sitting in his padded cell thinking he is a bird. Kirby realizes that they must do something about this, and the three hurry back to Earth to explain everything to Dr. Light.

At Dr. Light's cell, Kirby apologizes for giving Dr. Light a shock when he took the Game Boy, and the four head to a dinner to celebrate. The narrator remarks that everything ends well for everyone and that Mario has had enough of the detective life, considering that he never got a piece of cake.
