"Die Nacht der leuchtenden Yoshis!" is a 9-page comic published in the Yoshi's Story special issue of the German Club Nintendo magazine. This comic depicts a social commentary concerning racism.
Plot synopsis[edit]
The Yoshis are enjoying the waves surfing on a beach, when what appears to be a black fin appears in the water. The Yoshis, believing it to be a "great black shark", flee to the beach, alongside the other beachgoers. As Yoshi and Yellow Yoshi struggle to swim to shore, a woman arrives and throws them to shore. Throwing to shore, she explains that she normally has to pull fat beach vagrants to shore, but comments that they are much more attractive. The Yoshis, now on shore, thank the woman for saving them, finding her attractive.
The Yoshis still spot the "shark" near the shore, with Blue Yoshi claiming "it" to be very dangerous and evil. The "shark", revealed to be a Black Yoshi, surfaces for air and greets the other Yoshis, surprised by their reaction. Seeing the Black Yoshi, Blue Yoshi suggests that they scrub him clean, explaining that he is completely black and does not smell nice, with Red Yoshi suggests that someone caused an oil spill again. The Yoshis scrub the Black Yoshi in a tub, enraging him. After scrubbing him, Black Yoshi exclaims that he is hurting everywhere and that they should not have scrubbed him as Red Yoshi becomes scared by his appearance, realizing that he is black. The Yoshis then leave him, not wanting to spend time with a Black Yoshi as the Yoshi exclaims that he does not want to be alone, saying that he will be scared. Black Yoshi stays on the beach as the Sun sets, eventually becoming pitch dark.
Meanwhile, the other Yoshis are having a nice evening by the bonfire. Listing to punk music, their joy overflows and they begin dancing around the fire. However, Baby Bowser and Kamek, hiding in the bushes, plan to stop their party. In the bushes, Baby Bowser comments that the Yoshis are in good mood, though Kamek adds that they will soon wish they never hatched from their eggs, planning to capture them with a net and give them a thorough beating.
At night, while the Yoshis are asleep, Kamek hands a Shy Guy a roll of duct tape to tie up the Yoshis before entering one of the tents. A brief struggle follows before Kamek leaves the tent with Red Yoshi in his net, his mouth and arms taped. As the Red Yoshi, demands that Kamek set him free, Kamek taunts by saying that his pronunciation leaves much to be desired. Kamek and the Shy Guy proceed to capture and bind the rest of the Yoshis; with all of the Yoshis captured, Kamek remarks that they seem to have speaking problems today, to which Baby Bowser remarks that he they should find a professor who teaches them elocution lessons.
As Kamek prepares to beat the Yoshis with a frying pan, a Yoshi's Egg is hurled at him. Baby Bowser asks who threw egg, demanding that the perpetrator show themselves. Suddenly, Baby Bowser is hit by a Yoshi's Egg, and the Shy Guys are stomped on. Kamek and Baby Bowser, now furious, plan to attack the perpetrator, only to be hit by a barrage of Yoshi's Eggs. Kamek, Baby Bowser, and the Shy Guys flee as more Yoshi's Eggs are hurled towards them, as Kamek laments that he always listens to "this bratty Bowser". A voice suggests that the Yoshis do not feel relaxed, and the voice, to have come from Black Yoshi, pops out of the bushes and greets them as the other Yoshis realize that he saved them.
Later, the Yoshis celebrate by gathering around a bonfire; however, as they are strict non-smokers, they decide against passing around an actual peace pipe, in favor of sharing a glass of multivitamin juice. Light-blue Yoshis wonders how Black Yoshi got his color, to which he explains that his story is full of misunderstandings. He explains that, years ago, he met "three wacky guys" who claimed that they knew of a wizard said to be a master of his trade. Believing that he could help them out, he went with them to the wizard's castle. However, he realized too late that the wizard was actually a charlatan, explaining that the apparent wizard was actually a penguin breeder from southern Denmark, explaining why he turned him black when asking to be a different color.
The other Yoshis are moved by his story, with Yoshi suggesting that he sell it to Annette. As Red Yoshi wonder how they make up their past treatment towards him, Black Yoshi explains that it is not very terrible, explaining that he has meet so many ignorant people in the last few years and that one's life is not easy as a Black Yoshi. He then gives a few examples of hardships that he has faced as a Black Yoshi: Recently he wanted to go to a club to see "Yoshi and the Banshees" (a parody of the British rock band Siouxsie and the Banshees), but the bouncers would not let him, seemingly solely on the basis of his skin color. He then gives a couple of examples, such as the time where a southerner ranted that he should get a new coat of paint, as well the chef who wanted to serve his customers Black Yoshi meat.
The story ends with the other Yoshis sharing their misfortunes they have, with Yoshi explaining that everyone thought that he was a cactus after falling into the neighbor's thorn bush while playing soccer with his friends and Red Yoshi explaining that everyone thinks that he is a firefighter due to his red color. Black Yoshi realizes that he is not alone in his troubles, suggesting that the Yoshis stick together in the future. The narrator comments on the peaceful scene of the Yoshis talking with each other around the campfire before explaining that the moral of the story is to not judge a Yoshi by its color.
