The Necronomicon is a fictional grimoire appearing in the stories by H. P. Lovecraft. The Necronomicon Ex-Mortis, a version of the book that appears in the Evil Dead film series, appears in the Club Nintendo comic "Super Mario in Die Nacht des Grauens," where it is held by a skeletal hand in grave marked "ASH."
When Mario, Link, and Kirby find themselves in an underground crypt, Kirby notices the book held by a skeletal hand in one of the graves in the crypt. Thumbing through the book, tries to pronounce one of the spells, which results in him and his friends being fitted in stereotypical women's clothes. Mario reads another spell, which results in a gate opening. Mario and his friends enter the gate and into the Elmstreet-Tunnel, with Mario holding the book in his hand.
The Necronomicon is later used by Mario when he and his friends are surround by Abigor's minions in the Infernum. As Link is surrounded by the minions, Mario thumbs through the book and, finding the "Dark Hero Horror" spell, reads it, which turns them into angry, powerful, dark creatures. Using their powers, they fight Abigor's minions and manage to drive them back.
The book is seen towards the end of the comic. As Link mentions that the only thing he and his friends need is a way back to the normal world, Mario tries a spell in the book, and they end up at the Musikantenstadl, which Mario claims to be "worse than Hell."
