Blooper Racers[1] are a variety of Blooper that appears only in Ricco Harbor in Super Mario Sunshine. In this game, Mario must ride on one through an obstacle course run by the Big Daddy of Blooper-surfing, and in the harbor itself to get Red Coins. Every episode that Blooper Racers appear in is timed. They come in three colors, each affecting their abilities:

  • Green Blooper[2][3][4] – This Blooper is slow and has a tight turning radius. It also travels across land faster than other colors.
  • Yellow Blooper[3] – This Blooper has average speed and an average turning radius.
  • Purple Blooper[2][3] (or Pink)[4] – This Blooper is fast and has a wide turning radius.

If the Control Stick is held down in any direction, all Blooper Racer colors move at the same high speed, though they keep their unique turning radii,[5] making the Green Blooper superior over the other Blooper Racer colors.

In Episode 2 of Ricco Harbor, Mario must complete an obstacle course in 45 seconds or less while riding on the Blooper Racer of his choice. In Episode 6, Mario must ride on a Blooper Racer to get Red Coins scattered over the water in two minutes or less. It is possible, albeit very difficult, to complete the episode without a Blooper Racer.[6] In Episode 10, Mario must repeat Episode 2 but with only 40 seconds to complete it rather than 45. Bumping into an obstacle at top speed or running out of time in Episode 6 costs Mario a life.

Mario can dismount a Blooper Racer by running into a Swim Ring Pianta, or by landing on the Rocket Nozzle box or the umbrella near the Blooper Racers.[7]
