In video games, Bosses are powerful enemies found in levels. They are usually fought at the end of the level or world. Usually, the player can not advance to the next level until the boss is defeated however there are times when this rule is broken. Bosses are usually harder than all the enemies in that level/world.

Mini-Bosses or Mid-Bosses are bosses that are found in the middle of the level and are not as strong as a boss.

Final Bosses are the last bosses faced in the game and usually the hardest enemy in the whole game. Once the Final Bosses are beaten, the game is finished; however, there have been times when the game does not end immediately and the player may need to do an extra task (example: Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga).

Optional Bosses are bosses that exist in the game however one does not need to defeat them to beat the game. Sometimes, Optional Bosses are even harder than Final Bosses (like The Master and Bonetail).

Here is a list of all of the Bosses that appear in the Mario series. Final Bosses are in italics, Optional ones are in bold.
